Rav Safra
Sources
A
This
is like that
case where
Rav Safra was traveling in a caravan,
and
a certain lion
followed them,
accompanying them
along the way.
Every night,
the travelers
would send one of their donkeys to
the lion,
and
the lion
would eat
it.
When Rav Safra’s time arrived
to provide the lion with prey,
he sent it
his
donkey but
the lion
did not eat it. Rav Safra went ahead and acquired it
back, as his donkey had become ownerless when he presented it to the lion…
Bava Kamma 116a:10
§ The mishna teaches: If the adult sons
said
from the outset:
See that which
our
father left
behind;
we are
going to
engage
in business with our share of the property
and profit
from it, then
they enhanced
the property
for themselves.
The Gemara relates:
Rav Safra’s father left
him
dinars.
Rav Safra
took them
and
entered
into
a business venture with them. His brothers came
and
charged him in
a court of
law before Rava,
claiming their share of the profits…
Bava Batra 144a:2
§ The mishna teaches:
If there are
three men
there
who can convene as
a court,
he
may stipulate before
the court that he will undertake to return the item provided that he receives full compensation for lost income. The Gemara relates:
Issur and Rav Safra formed a joint venture with each other. Rav Safra went and dissolved
their partnership
without Issur’s knowledge in the presence of two
witnesses. Rav Safra
came before Rabba bar Rav Huna
in order to ratify the dissolution of the partnership…
Bava Metzia 31b:15
§ The Gemara relates: There was an incident involving
a certain man who sent a bill of divorce to his wife
with an agent.
The agent said: I do not know her.
The husband
said to him: Go give
the bill of divorce
to Abba bar Minyumi, as he knows her, and he will go and give it to her.
The agent
came and did not find Abba bar Minyumi,
and he did not know what to do.
He found Rabbi Abbahu and Rabbi Ḥanina bar Pappa and Rabbi Yitzḥak Nappaḥa, and Rav Safra was sitting among them.
The agent asked them what he should do…
Gittin 29b:9-12
GEMARA:
The Gemara starts by questioning the need for the seemingly extraneous
halakha
stated in the mishna:
Now
that the mishna stated that
one can betroth
a woman
by
means of
his agent, is
it
necessary
to state that a man can betroth a woman
by himself? Rav Yosef says:
The mishna writes both
halakhot
to teach that although the betrothal is valid either way, it is
more
fitting that the
mitzva
be performed
by
the man
himself than by
means of
his agent…
Kiddushin 41a:4
There are
those
who say
that Rav Dimi did not actually make this statement himself. Rather, the following incident occurred:
Rav Dimi, the brother of Rav Safra, was ill. Rav Safra went in to inquire about his
condition. Rav Dimi
said to
those present:
I have
blessing and merit
coming to me, as I have fulfilled all of
the statements
that the Sages say.
Rav Safra
said to him: But have you fulfilled
the instruction of the Sages that
a person should never speak about the goodness of another
in the presence of others…
Arakhin 16a:4
With regard to the statement of Rav Yosef, the Gemara relates that
Rava and Rav Safra visited the house of Mar Yoḥana, son of Rav Ḥana bar Adda, and some say
they visited
the house of Mar Yoḥana, son of Rav Ḥana bar Bizna.
Mar Yoḥana
prepared for them a third-born calf. Rava said to
the
attendant
of Mar Yoḥana, who was a priest and would normally receive gifts of the priesthood from Mar Yoḥana:
Grant us the gifts, as I wish to eat tongue with mustard,
and the tongue along with the jaw is one of the gifts…
Chullin 133a:10-13
§ The Gemara relates that
when Rav Safra passed away the
other
Sages did not rend
their garments
over him. They said: We did not learn from him,
as he did not disseminate his Torah knowledge to the public.
Abaye
berated them and
said to them: Is it taught
in the
baraita
: If one’s
teacher died? It is taught:
If a Torah
scholar died,
and Rav Safra was certainly a Torah scholar.
And furthermore, every day his teachings are in our mouths in the study hall,
so that even if we did not learn directly from him…
Moed Katan 25a:7
With regard to the afflictions of the Jewish people, the Gemara relates:
Rabbi Abbahu would praise Rav Safra to the heretics
by saying
that he is a great man.
Therefore,
they remitted
Rav Safra’s obligation to pay
taxes for thirteen years,
as they relied upon Rabbi Abbahu’s word and wanted to reward a great man.
One day they found
Rav Safra and
said to him: It is written: “You only have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore, I will visit upon you all your iniquities”
(Amos 3:2)…
Avodah Zarah 4a:11-12
§
Rabbi Yoḥanan relates: Once we were traveling on a ship and we saw a certain fish that took its head out of the sea, and its eyes had the appearance of two moons, and water scattered from its two gills like the two rivers of Sura. Rav Safra relates: Once we were traveling on a ship and we saw a certain fish that took its head out of the sea, and it had horns, and
the following was
inscribed on them: I am a lowly creature of the sea and I am three hundred parasangs
long,
and I am going into the mouth of the leviathan…
