Mocking (לגלג)
Sources
A
The Gemara analyzes the rest of that verse:
“And your gates of precious stones”
(Isaiah 54:12). This should be understood
in
light of
that
incident
where Rabbi Yoḥanan sat and taught:
In the
future, the Holy One, Blessed be He, will bring precious stones and pearls that are thirty by thirty
cubits,
and He will hollow out in them
a hole of
ten by twenty
cubits
and set them in the gates of Jerusalem. A certain
unnamed
student sneered at him…
Bava Batra 75a:10-11
§
The Sages taught: A person should not throw stones from his property into the public domain. An incident
occurred
involving a certain individual who was throwing stones from his property into the public domain, and a certain pious man found him.
The latter
said to him: Lowlife [
reika
], for what
reason
are you throwing stones from property that is not yours into your property?
The man
mocked him,
as he did not understand what he meant, as the property from which he was throwing stones was his.
Bava Kamma 50b:2
“Judges and officers you shall place for you within all your gates that the Lord your God is giving you for your tribes, and they shall judge the people with fair judgment” (Deuteronomy 16:18).
“Judges and officers you shall place for you within all your gates that the Lord your God is giving you for your tribes, and they shall judge the people with fair judgment” –
halakha
: A person’s relative, what is the ruling, is it permitted for him to sit in judgment for him? This is what the Sages taught: These are considered relatives: One’s father, one’s brother…
Devarim Rabbah 5:1
In matters of Torah, what is
the case with regard to which the verse said that one should respond to a fool’s folly?
As in
the case
where Rabban Gamliel was sitting and he interpreted
a verse
homiletically: In the future,
in the World-to-Come,
a woman will give birth every day, as it says: “The woman with child and her that gives birth together”
(Jeremiah 31:7), explaining that birth will occur on the same day as conception.
A certain student scoffed at him
and
said:
That cannot be…
Shabbat 30b:9
“He brought me to the wine house, and his banner over me is love” (Song of Songs 2:4).
“He brought me to the wine house,” Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Meir says: The congregation of Israel said: ‘The evil inclination gained control over me like wine, and I said of the calf: “This is your god, Israel”’ (Exodus 32:4). When wine enters a person, it confuses him. Rabbi Yehuda said to him: Enough, Meir, one does not expound Song of Songs disparagingly, but rather, favorably, as Song of Songs was given only in praise of Israel…
Shir HaShirim Rabbah 2:4:1
With regard to the appropriate blessing over boiled vegetables:
Let us say
that this dispute
is parallel
to a dispute between the
tanna’im
,
as the Gemara relates:
Two students were sitting before bar Kappara when
cooked
cabbage,
cooked Damascene
plums and pullets were set before him. Bar Kappara gave one of
the students
permission to recite a blessing. He hurried and recited a blessing over the pullets
and
his counterpart ridiculed him
for gluttonously reciting the blessing that should have been recited later, first…
Berakhot 39a:4
“They said: We saw that the Lord was with you, and we said: Let there now be an oath between us, between us and you, and we will establish a covenant with you” (Genesis 26:28).
“If you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you, and just as we have done only [
rak
] good with you, and we sent you in peace; you are now the blessed of the Lord” (Genesis 26:29).
“They said: We saw” – we have seen your actions and the actions of your fathers.
“Let there now be an oath…if you will do us [no harm…and just as we have done only [
rak
] good with you]” –
rak…
