A song of ascents. Of David. I rejoiced when they said to me,“We are going to the House of the LORD.” Our feet stood inside your gates, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem built up, a city knit together, to which tribes would make pilgrimage,the tribes of the LORD,—as was enjoined upon Israel—to praise the name of the LORD. There the thrones of judgment stood,thrones of the house of David. Pray for the well-being of Jerusalem;“May those who love you be at peace. May there be well-being within your ramparts,peace in your citadels.” For the sake of my kin and friends,I pray for your well-being; for the sake of the house of the LORD our God,I seek your good.

Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: “Jerusalem built up, a city knit together” (Psalms 122:3) — A city that makes all Israel friends.

It is that pull of holiness that drives our 'face to Jerusalem when you pray'

The Sages taught in a Tosefta: A blind person and one who is unable to approximate the directions and, therefore, is unable to face Jerusalem in order to pray, may focus his heart towards his Father in Heaven, as it is stated: “And they shall pray to the Lord” (I Kings 8:44). One who was standing in prayer in the Diaspora, should focus his heart toward Eretz Yisrael, as it is stated: “And they shall pray to You by way of their land which You have given to their fathers” (I Kings 8:48). One who was standing in Eretz Yisrael, should focus his heart toward Jerusalem, as it is stated: “And they shall pray to the Lord by way of the city that You have chosen” (I Kings 8:44). One who was standing in Jerusalem, should focus his heart toward the Temple, as it is stated: “And they shall pray toward this house” (II Chronicles 6:32). One who was standing in the Temple, should focus his heart toward the Holy of Holies, as it is stated: “And they shall pray toward this place” (I Kings 8:35). One who was standing in the Holy of Holies, should focus his heart toward the seat of the ark-cover [kapporet], atop the ark, the dwelling place of God’s glory. One who was standing behind the seat of the ark-cover, should visualize himself as if standing before the ark-cover and turn toward it.Consequently, one standing in prayer in the East turns to face west, and one standing in the West, turns to face east. One standing in the South, turns to face north, and one standing in the North, turns to face south; all of the people of Israel find themselves focusing their hearts toward one place, the Holy of Holies in the Temple.
There is a midrash,
מדרש זוטא - שיר השירים (בובר) פרשה א
שבעים שמות קרא לירושלים.
that affirms that Jerusalem has 70 names. And proceeds to list 84 of them. This is a sign, truly, that Jerusalem belongs to many people, in many ways, and that any of us should have, must have, our own connection to Jerusalem. Shabbat Shalom, and happy Yom Yerushalayim tonight.
ירושלם -- Renowned capital of all Israel, afterwards the Southern Kingdom, seat of central worship in the Temple. Word origins could be: ירוש שלם meaning, "possession of peace." Or עיר שלם meaning, "city of peace."

And Abraham called the name of the place "Hashem Yireh- God will see". (Genesis 2:14) Rabbi Yohanan said "... Abraham called it "Yireh", as it says "And Abraham called the name of the place Hashem Yireh. Shem called it Shalem, as it says "And Malchitzedek, the king of Shalem..."(Genesis 17) The Holy One, Blessed be He, said "If I call it Yireh, as Abraham called it, then Shem, who was a righteous man, will be hurt-- but if I call it Shalem, then Abraham, who was a righteous man, will be hurt. Instead, I call it Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), as they called it together: Yireh Shalem. Jerusalem.......

The sages relate: "The Almighty created the world in the same manner as a child if formed in its mother's womb. Just as a child begins to grow from its navel and then develops into its full form, so the world began from its central point and then developed in all directions."
The "navel" of the world is Jerusalem, and its core is the great altar in the Holy Temple
Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Beit Habehirah, 2:2
It is a tradition known to all that the place where David and Solomon built the altar, on the site of Aravnah's threshing floor, is the same place where Abraham built an altar to bind Isaac for sacrafice, the place where Noah built an altar when he came out of the ark, the place where Cain and Abel brought their offerings to God, and where Adam sacrificed after his creation. And Adam was created from the earth of that very spot.

וא"ל רב נחמן לר' יצחק מאי דכתיב (הושע יא, ט) בקרבך קדוש ולא אבוא בעיר משום דבקרבך קדוש לא אבוא בעיר א"ל הכי א"ר יוחנן אמר הקב"ה לא אבוא בירושלים של מעלה עד שאבוא לירושלים של מטה ומי איכא ירושלים למעלה אין דכתיב (תהלים קכב, ג) ירושלם הבנויה כעיר שחוברה לה יחדיו.
And Rav Naḥman said to Rabbi Yitzḥak: What is the meaning of that which is written: “It is sacred in your midst, and I will not enter the city” (Hosea 11:9)? This verse is puzzling: Because it is sacred in your midst, will God not enter the city? Rabbi Yitzḥak said to Rav Naḥman that Rabbi Yoḥanan said the verse should be understood as follows: The Holy Blessed One, said: I shall not enter Jerusalem above, in heaven, until I enter Jerusalem on earth down below at the time of the redemption, when it will be sacred in your midst. The Gemara asks: And is there such a place as Jerusalem above? The Gemara answers: Yes, as it is written: “Jerusalem built up, a city unified together” (Psalms 122:3). The term unified indicates that there are two cities of Jerusalem, a heavenly one and an earthly one, which are bound together.

Reb Naftali Zvi of Ropshitz, a Hasidic master, taught: “By our service to God, we build Jerusalem daily. One of us adds a row, another only a brick. When Jerusalem is completed, redemption will come.
