One day the servant maids told the queen that her days were numbered and that he would soon divorce her and surely take one of them as a wife instead.
The queen asked them what prompted them to make such a bizarre statement!
They said to her that they had observed that the other day when she came from the market, she had a speck of dirt clinging to her hand, something that they all knew the king could not stand.
The queen replied that the servant maids were very foolish if they think that on account of a speck of dust that can be wiped off with a flick of a finger would be grounds for divorce and to be exchanged for one of them who is covered with mud sticking to their skin all the time!
This is a parable the Rishonim give of what Moshe was saying to Aharon after seeing the Egel.
Yes, Klal Yisrael’s sin was an aberration from the norm and negative indeed. And, it would be immediately addressed.
However the nations like to point out the shortcomings of Klal Yisrael at every opportunity and blow them out of proportion.
Throughout history until this very day, we see that the Jews are blamed for commiting crimes that are taken way out of proportion and are often perpetrated to an even larger degree by the accusers!
Let us not forget that we are the Am HaNivchar, the nation chosen by Hashem from the times of Avraham and we showed our loyalty more than we have rebelled and we are a light unto the nations, and we are special.
Our enemies will try to gaslight us and discourage us, but we will keep on pushing forward and doing the right thing.

לשמצה בקמיהם. לדורות הבאים, שהיו אומות העולם מחרפים את ישראל במעשה העגל, מיד צעק לבני לוי ואמר להם כה אמר ה' [אלהי ישראל שימו איש חרבו על ירכו וגו'] שתהרגו בעובדי העגל, ומהנה למדנו ששבטו של לוי לא עבד ע"ז:
