(1) On the third new moon after the Israelites had gone forth from the land of Egypt, on that very day, they entered the wilderness of Sinai.(2) Having journeyed from Rephidim, they entered the wilderness of Sinai and encamped in the wilderness. Israel encamped there in front of the mountain,(3) and Moses went up to God. יהוה called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus shall you say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel:(4) ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Me.(5) Now then, if you will obey Me faithfully and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession among all the peoples. Indeed, all the earth is Mine,(6) but you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the children of Israel.”(7) Moses came and summoned the elders of the people and put before them all that יהוה had commanded him.(8) All those assembled answered as one, saying, “All that יהוה has spoken we will do!” And Moses brought back the people’s words to יהוה.(9) And יהוה said to Moses, “I will come to you in a thick cloud, in order that the people may hear when I speak with you and so trust you ever after.” Then Moses reported the people’s words to יהוה,(10) and יהוה said to Moses, “Go to the people and warn them to stay pure. today and tomorrow. Let them wash their clothes.(11) Let them be ready for the third day; for on the third day יהוה will come down, in the sight of all the people, on Mount Sinai.(12) You shall set bounds for the people round about, saying, ‘Beware of going up the mountain or touching the border of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death(13) without being touched—by being either stoned or shot; beast or person, a trespasser shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they may go up on the mountain.”(14) Moses came down from the mountain to the people and warned the people to stay pure, and they washed their clothes.(15) And he said to the people, “Be ready for the third day: [the men among] you should not go near a woman.”(16) On the third day, as morning dawned, there was thunder, and lightning, and a dense cloud upon the mountain, and a very loud blast of the horn; and all the people who were in the camp trembled.(17) Moses led the people out of the camp toward God, and they took their places at the foot of the mountain.(18) Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke, for יהוה had come down upon it in fire; the smoke rose like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled violently.(19) The blare of the horn grew louder and louder. As Moses spoke, God answered him in thunder.(20) יהוה came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain, and יהוה called Moses to the top of the mountain and Moses went up.(21) יהוה said to Moses, “Go down, warn the people not to break through to יהוה to gaze, lest many of them perish.(22) The priests also, who come near יהוה, must stay pure, lest יהוה break out against them.”(23) But Moses said to יהוה, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us saying, ‘Set bounds about the mountain and sanctify it.’”(24) So יהוה said to him, “Go down, and come back together with Aaron; but let not the priests or the people break through to come up to יהוה, lest [God] break out against them.”(25) And Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.

(1) In the third month, after the children of Yisra᾽el were gone out of the land of Miżrayim, the same day they came into the wilderness of Sinay. (2) For they were departed from Refidim, and were come to the desert of Sinay, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Yisra᾽el camped before the mountain. (3) And Moshe went up to God, and the Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Ya῾aqov, and tell the children of Yisra᾽el; (4) You have seen what I did to Miżrayim, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself. (5) Now therefore, if you will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own treasure from among all peoples: (6) for all the earth is mine: and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak to the children of Yisra᾽el. (7) And Moshe came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before them all these words which the Lord had commanded him, (8) and all the people answered together, and said, All that the Lord has spoken we will do. And Moshe reported the words of the people to the Lord. (9) And the Lord said to Moshe, Lo, I come to thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. (10) And Moshe told the words of the people to the Lord. And the Lord said to Moshe, Go to the people, and sanctify them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes, (11) and be ready by the third day: for on the third day the Lord will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinay. (12) And thou shalt set bounds to the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that you go not up into the mountain, or touch the border of it: whoever touches the mountain shall be surely put to death: (13) no hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the horn sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain. (14) And Moshe went down from the mountain to the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. (15) And he said to the people, Be ready by the third day: come not near a woman. (16) And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mountain, and the sound of a shofar exceeding loud; so that all the people in the camp trembled. (17) And Moshe brought the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the foot of the mountain. (18) And mount Sinay smoked in every part, because the Lord descended upon it in fire: and the smoke of it ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. (19) And then the voice of the shofar sounded louder and louder; Moshe speaks, and God answers him by a voice. (20) And the Lord came down upon mount Sinay, on the top of the mountain: and the Lord called Moshe up to the top of the mount; and Moshe went up. (21) And the Lord said to Moshe, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through to the Lord to gaze, and many of them perish. (22) And let the priests also, who come near to the Lord, sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them. (23) And Moshe said to the Lord, The people cannot come up to mount Sinay: for thou didst charge us, saying, Set bounds about the mountain, and sanctify it. (24) And the Lord said to him. Go, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aharon with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, lest he break forth upon them. (25) So Moshe went down to the people, and spoke to them.
