Vayeitzei 84

(30) And Jacob cohabited with Rachel also; indeed, he loved Rachel more than Leah. And he served him another seven years.(31) Seeing that Leah was unloved, יהוה opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.(32) Leah conceived and bore a son, and named him Reuben; for she declared, “It means: ‘יהוה has seen my affliction’; it also means: ‘Now my husband will love me.’”(33) She conceived again and bore a son, and declared, “This is because יהוה heard that I was unloved and has given me this one also”; so she named him Simeon.(34) Again she conceived and bore a son and declared, “This time my husband will become attached to me, for I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named Levi.(35) She conceived again and bore a son, and declared, “This time I will praise יהוה.” Therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing.CHAPTER 30(1) When Rachel saw that she had borne Jacob no children, she became envious of her sister; and Rachel said to Jacob, “Give me children, or I shall die.”(2) Jacob was incensed at Rachel, and said, “Can I take the place of God, who has denied you fruit of the womb?”(3) She said, “Here is my maid Bilhah. Consort with her, that she may bear on my knees and that through her I too may have children.”(4) So she gave him her maid Bilhah as concubine, and Jacob cohabited with her.(5) Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.(6) And Rachel said, “God has vindicated me; indeed, [God] has heeded my plea and given me a son.” Therefore she named him Dan.(7) Rachel’s maid Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.(8) And Rachel said, “A fateful contest I waged with my sister; yes, and I have prevailed.” So she named him Naphtali.(9) When Leah saw that she had stopped bearing children, she took her maid Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as concubine.(10) And when Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a son,(11) Leah said, “What luck!” So she named him Gad.(12) When Leah’s maid Zilpah bore Jacob a second son,(13) Leah declared, “What fortune!” meaning, “Women will deem me fortunate.” So she named him Asher.

(30) And he went in also to Raĥel, and moreover he loved Raĥel more than Le᾽a, and served with him yet another seven years. (31) And when the Lord saw that Le᾽a was hated, He opened her womb: but Raĥel was barren. (32) And Le᾽a conceived, and bore a son, and she called his name Re᾽uven: for she said, Surely the Lord has looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me. (33) And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Because the Lord has heard that I was hated, He has therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Shim῾on. (34) And she conceived again, and bore a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined to me, because I have born him three sons; therefore was his name called Levi. (35) And she conceived again, and bore a son and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Yehuda, and she left off bearing. CHAPTER 30 (1)And when Raĥel saw that she bore Ya῾aqov no children, Raĥel envied her sister; and said, Give me children, or else I die. (2) And Ya῾aqov’s anger burned against Raĥel: and he said, Am I in the place of God, Who has withheld from thee the fruit of the womb? (3) And she said, Behold my maid Bilha, go in to her; and she shall bear upon my knees, that I may also have children by her. (4) And she gave him Bilha her handmaid to wife: and Ya῾aqov went in to her. (5) And Bilha conceived, and bore Ya῾aqov a son. (6) And Raĥel said, God has judged me, and has also heard my voice, and has given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan. (7) And Bilha Raĥel’s maid conceived again, and bore Ya῾aqov a second son. (8) And Raĥel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name Naftali. (9) When Le᾽a saw that she had stopped bearing, she took Zilpa her maid, and gave her to Ya῾aqov to wife. (10) And Zilpa Le᾽a’s maid bore Ya῾aqov a son. (11) And Le᾽a said, Fortune comes, and she called his name Gad. (12) And Zilpa Le᾽a’s maid bore Ya῾aqov a second son. (13) And Le᾽a said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
