(1) And the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. (2) And on the seventh day God finished God's work which God had made; and God rested on the seventh day from all God's work which God had made. (3) And God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy; because on it God rested from all God's work which God in creating had made.
The biblical Hebrew word for "rest" is from the same root as Shabbat.

(4) Then said the LORD unto Moses: ‘Behold, I will make bread rain down from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my instruction, or not. (5) But on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.’
(13) And it came to pass at evening, that the quails came up, and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew round about the camp. (14) And when the layer of dew was gone up, behold upon the face of the wilderness a fine, scale-like thing, fine as the hoar-frost on the ground. (15) And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another: ‘What is it?’—for they knew not what it was. And Moses said unto them: ‘It is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat. (16) This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded: Gather ye of it every man according to his eating; an omer a head, according to the number of your persons, shall ye take it, every man for them that are in his tent.’ (17) And the children of Israel did so, and gathered some more, some less. (18) And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating. (19) And Moses said unto them: ‘Let no man leave of it till the morning.’

(20) But they did not listen to Moses; and some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and rotted; and Moses was angry with them. (21) And they gathered it morning by morning, every person according to his eating; and as the sun waxed hot, it melted. (22) And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one; and all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses. (23) And he said to them: ‘This is that which the Eternal has spoken: Tomorrow is a day of rest, a holy Shabbat for the Eternal. Bake that which you will bake, and cook that which you will cook; and all that remains over keep it for you until the morning.’ (24) And they laid it up until the morning, as Moses said; and it did not rot, neither were there any worms in it. (25) And Moses said: ‘Eat that today; for today is a Shabbat unto the Eternal; today you shall not find it in the field. (26) Six days you shall gather it; but on the seventh day is the Shabbat, on it there shall be none.’
(27) And it came to pass on the seventh day, that there went out some of the people to gather, and they found none. (28) And the Eternal said to Moses: ‘How long will you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? (29) See that the Eternal has given you the Shabbat; therefore God gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days; every one stay in their place, let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.’ (30) So the people rested on the seventh day.
(8) Remember to keep the the sabbath day holy. (9) Six days shalt you work, and do all your melakhah; (10) but the seventh day is a Shabbat unto the Eternal your God, in it you shall not do any manner of work, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor they stranger that is in your gates; (11) for in six days the Eternal made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Eternal blessed the Shabbat day, and made it holy.
(12) Observe the sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Eternal your God commanded you. (13) Six days shalt you work, and do all your melakhah; (14) but the seventh day is a sabbath unto the Eternal your God, in it you shall not do any manner of melakhah, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your ox, nor your ass, nor any of your cattle, nor the stranger that is in your gates; that your man-servant and your maid-servant may rest as well as you. (15) And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Eternal your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Eternal thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
(13) ’Speak unto B'nai Yisrael, saying: Surely you shall keep My sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Eternal who makes you holy. (14) You shall keep the sabbath, for it is holy for you; every one that profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any melakhah on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. (15) Six days shall melakhah be done; but on the seventh day is a sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Eternal; whosoever does any melakhah in the sabbath day, they shall surely be put to death. (16) And B'nai Yisrael shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, as a perpetual covenant. (17) It is a sign between Me and B'nai Yisrael for ever; for in six days the Eternal made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day God ceased from work and rested.’
(1) And the Eternal spoke to Moses, saying: (2) Speak to B'nai Yisrael, and say to them: The appointed seasons of the Eternal, which you shall proclaim to be holy gatherings, even these are My appointed seasons. (3) Six days shall melakhah be done; but on the seventh day is a sabbath of solemn rest, a holy gathering; you shall do no manner of melakhah; it is a sabbath unto the Eternal in all your dwellings.

(32) And while B'nai Yisrael were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the sabbath day. (33) And the ones that found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron, and to all the congregation. (34) And they put him in ward, because it had not been explained what should be done to him. (35) And the Eternal said to Moses: ‘The man shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.’ (36) And all the congregation brought him outside the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as the Eternal commanded Moses.
(13) If you turn away your foot because of the sabbath, from pursuing your business on My holy day; And call the sabbath a delight, And the holy of the Eternal honorable; And shalt honor it, not doing your what you desire, nor pursuing thy business, nor speaking about such matters; (14) Then shall make yourself a delight for the Eternal, and I will make you ride upon the high places of the earth, and I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your ancestor; for the mouth of the Eternal has spoken.
