Noach 84

(1) Everyone on earth had the same language and the same words.(2) And as they migrated from the east, they came upon a valley in the land of Shinar and settled there.(3) They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and burn them hard.”—Brick served them as stone, and bitumen served them as mortar.—(4) And they said, “Come, let us build us a city, and a tower with its top in the sky, to make a name for ourselves; else we shall be scattered all over the world.”(5) יהוה came down to look at the city and tower that humanity had built,(6) and יהוה said, “If, as one people with one language for all, this is how they have begun to act, then nothing that they may propose to do will be out of their reach.(7) Let us, then, go down and confound their speech there, so that they shall not understand one another’s speech.”(8) Thus יהוה scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city.(9) That is why it was called Babel, because there יהוה confounded the speech of the whole earth; and from there יהוה scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

(1) And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. (2) And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shin῾ar; and they dwelt there. (3) And they said to one another, Come, let us make bricks, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. (4) And they said, Come, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach to heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. (5) And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men were building. (6) And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be withheld from them, which they have schemed to do. (7) Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech. (8) So the Lord scattered them abroad from there upon the face of all the earth: and they ceased to build the city. (9) Therefore is the name of it called Bavel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
