רַב אַסִּי הֲוָה לֵיהּ הָהִיא אִמָּא זְקֵינָה. אֲמַרָה לֵיהּ: בָּעֲיָנָא תַּכְשִׁיטִין. עֲבַד לַהּ. בָּעֲיָנָא גַּבְרָא: נְיעַיֵּין לָךְ. בָּעֲיָנָא גַּבְרָא דְּשַׁפִּיר כְּוָתָךְ, שַׁבְקַהּ וַאֲזַל לְאַרְעָא דְיִשְׂרָאֵל.

שְׁמַע דְּקָא אָזְלָה אַבָּתְרֵיהּ. אֲתָא לְקַמֵּיהּ דְּרַבִּי יוֹחָנָן, אֲמַר לֵיהּ: מַהוּ לָצֵאת מֵאֶרֶץ לְחוּצָה לָאָרֶץ? אֲמַר לֵיהּ: אָסוּר. לִקְרַאת אִמָּא מַהוּ? אֲמַר לֵיהּ: אֵינִי יוֹדֵעַ.

אִתָּרַח פּוּרְתָּא, הֲדַר אֲתָא. אֲמַר לֵיהּ: אַסִּי, נִתְרַצֵּיתָ לָצֵאת – הַמָּקוֹם יַחֲזִירְךָ לְשָׁלוֹם...

אַדְּהָכִי וְהָכִי שְׁמַע לַאֲרוֹנַאּ דְּקָאָתֵי. אָמַר: אִי יְדַעִי לָא נְפַקִי.

Rav Asi had an elderly mother. She said to him: I want jewelry, and he made jewelry for her. She said to him: I want a man whom I can marry, and he said to her: I will seek one for you. She said to him: I want a husband who is as handsome as you. At this point, he realized that she was senile, and that he would be unable to fulfill all her requests. Therefore, he left her and went to Eretz Yisrael.

Rav Asi heard that she was following him to Eretz Yisrael. He came before Rabbi Yoḥanan and said to him: What is the halakha with regard to leaving Eretz Yisrael to go outside of Eretz Yisrael? Rabbi Yoḥanan said to him: It is prohibited. Rav Asi further asked: If one is going to greet his mother, what is the halakha? Rabbi Yoḥanan said to him: I do not know.

Rav Asi waited a little while, and then came back to him. Rabbi Yoḥanan said to him: Asi, you are evidently determined to leave. May the Omnipresent return you in peace, and he said no more...

In the meantime, while he was traveling to meet her, Rav Asi heard that her coffin was coming, i.e., his mother had died and her coffin was being brought to Eretz Yisrael. He said: Had I known I would not have left, as after his mother’s death he was not obligated to leave Eretz Yisrael to honor her.

מַהוּ שֶׁיִּטָּמֵא לִכְבוֹד אָבִיו וְאִמּוֹ? רִבִּי יָסָא שָׁמַע דְּאָתַת אִימֵּיהּ לְבוֹצְרָה. אָתָא וְשָׁאַל לְרִבִּי יוֹחָנָן, "מָהוּ לָצֵאת?" אָמַר לֵיהּ, "מִפְּנֵי סַכָּנַת דְּרָכִים צֵא, וְאִם בִּשְּׁבִיל כְּבוֹד אִמְּךָ אֵינִי יוֹדֵעַ." אָמַר רַב שְׁמוּאֵל בַּר רַב יִצְחָק, "עוֹד הִיא צְרִיכָה לְרִבִּי יוֹחָנָן." אַטְרַח עֲלוֹי וְאָמַר, "גָּמַרְתָּ לָצֵאת! תָּבוֹא בְשָׁלוֹם."...

May [a Cohen] defile himself in honor of his father and mother? Rebbi Yasa heard that his mother had come to Bostra. He went and asked Rebbi Yoḥanan, may I leave? He said to him, if it is because of danger on the road, leave. If it is in order to honor your mother, I do not know. Rebbi Samuel bar Rav Isaac said, Rebbi Yoḥanan still needs to answer. He importuned him, so he said: Since you decided to go, return in peace...

The same story appears almost verbatim in Yerushalmi Berakhos 3:1 and Yerushalmi Shevi'is 6:1

בָּעִינָא גַּבְרָא! נִיעַיֵּין לָךְ. אין כונתו לדחותה בשקר ח"ו אלא...היה רוצה לפייס אדם אחד בממון שיתרצה ליקח אשה זקנה כמוה, אך אחר שאמרה לו שיהיה יפה כמוהו אמר ודאי דבר זה לא יתכן להיות כי אדם יפה כמוהו קפצי עליה אינשי בעלי ממון ובעלי יופי, ואיך אפשר שיתרצה ליקח אשה זקנה?

רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר חֲלַשׁ. עַל לְגַבֵּיהּ רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן. חֲזָא דַּהֲוָה קָא גָּנֵי בְּבֵית אָפֵל. גַּלְיֵיהּ לִדְרָעֵיהּ וּנְפַל נְהוֹרָא. חַזְיֵיהּ דַּהֲוָה קָא בָּכֵי רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר. אֲמַר לֵיהּ: אַמַּאי קָא בָּכֵית?...אֲמַר לֵיהּ: לְהַאי שׁוּפְרָא דְּבָלֵי בְּעַפְרָא קָא בָּכֵינָא. אֲמַר לֵיהּ: עַל דָּא וַדַּאי קָא בָּכֵית, וּבְכוֹ תַּרְוַיְיהוּ.

The Gemara relates that Rabbi Elazar, another of Rabbi Yoḥanan’s students, fell ill. Rabbi Yoḥanan entered to visit him, and saw that he was lying in a dark room. Rabbi Yoḥanan exposed his arm, and light radiated from his flesh, filling the house. He saw that Rabbi Elazar was crying, and said to him: Why are you crying?...Rabbi Elazar said to Rabbi Yoḥanan: I am not crying over my misfortune, but rather, over this beauty of yours that will decompose in the earth, as Rabbi Yoḥanan’s beauty caused him to consider human mortality. Rabbi Yoḥanan said to him: Over this, it is certainly appropriate to weep. Both cried over the fleeting nature of beauty in the world and death that eventually overcomes all.

רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן הֲוָה רְגִיל דַּהֲוָה קָא אָזֵיל וְיָתֵיב אַשַּׁעֲרֵי דִטְבִילָה. אֲמַר: כִּי סָלְקָן בְּנוֹת יִשְׂרָאֵל וְאָתְיָין מִטְּבִילָה, מִסְתַּכְּלָן בִּי, וְנֶהֱוֵי לְהוּ זַרְעָא דְּשַׁפִּירֵי כְּווֹתִי...

Rabbi Yoḥanan, who was known for his extraordinary good looks, explained this and said: When the daughters of Israel emerge from their immersion, they will look at me, and will have children as beautiful as I...

אמר רבי יוחנן אנא אישתיירי משפירי ירושלים האי מאן דבעי מחזי שופריה דרבי יוחנן נייתי כסא דכספא מבי סלקי ונמלייה פרצידיא דרומנא סומקא ונהדר ליה כלילא דוורדא סומקא לפומיה ונותביה בין שמשא לטולא ההוא זהרורי מעין שופריה דר' יוחנן

Rabbi Yoḥanan said: I alone remain of the beautiful people of Jerusalem. The Gemara continues: One who wishes to see something resembling the beauty of Rabbi Yoḥanan should bring a new, shiny silver goblet from the smithy and fill it with red pomegranate seeds [partzidaya] and place a diadem of red roses upon the lip of the goblet, and position it between the sunlight and shade. That luster is a semblance of Rabbi Yoḥanan’s beauty.

יומא חד הוה קא סחי ר' יוחנן בירדנא חזייה ריש לקיש ושוור לירדנא אבתריה אמר ליה חילך לאורייתא אמר ליה שופרך לנשי א"ל אי הדרת בך יהיבנא לך אחותי דשפירא מינאי קביל עליה...

One day, Rabbi Yoḥanan was bathing in the Jordan River. Reish Lakish saw him and jumped into the Jordan, pursuing him. At that time, Reish Lakish was the leader of a band of marauders. Rabbi Yoḥanan said to Reish Lakish: Your strength is fit for Torah study. Reish Lakish said to him: Your beauty is fit for women. Rabbi Yoḥanan said to him: If you return to the pursuit of Torah, I will give you my sister in marriage, who is more beautiful than I am. Reish Lakish accepted upon himself to study Torah...

...כַּד דְּמָךְ רִבִּי יוֹחָנָן אִיתַכָּפּוּן אֵיקוֹנַייָא. אָֽמְרִין. דְּלָא הֲווָת אֵיקוֹנִין דִּכְווָתֵהּ...

...When Rebbi Joḥanan expired, the pictures were bent. They said, there was no picture beauty like his...
