In Your Eyes - Parshat Shlach

That shall be your fringe; look at (וּרְאִיתֶ֣ם) it and recall all the commandments of Adonai and observe them, so that you do not follow (וְלֹֽא־תָת֜וּרוּ) your heart and eyes in your lustful (זֹנִ֖ים) urge.

(17) When Moses sent them to scout (לָת֖וּר) the land of Canaan, he said to them, “Go up there into the Negeb and on into the hill country, (18) and see (וּרְאִיתֶ֥ם) what kind of country it is. Are the people who dwell in it strong or weak, few or many?

(32) Thus they spread an evil report among the Israelites about the land they had scouted (תָּר֣וּ), saying, “The country that we traversed and scouted (לָת֣וּר) is one that devours its settlers. All the people that we saw (רָאִ֥ינוּ) in it are of great size; (33) we saw (רָאִ֥ינוּ) the Nephilim [giants] there—the Anakites are part of the Nephilim—and in our eyes (בְעֵינֵ֙ינוּ֙ ), we seemed as grasshoppers to ourselves, and so we must have seemed in their eyes (בְּעֵינֵיהֶֽם).

(32) But your carcasses shall drop in this wilderness, (33) while your children roam the wilderness for forty years, suffering for your faithlessness (זְנוּתֵיכֶ֑ם), until the last of your carcasses is down in the wilderness.

"Do not follow your heart and eyes in your lustful urge": The heart and the eyes are the “spies” of the body — they act as its agents for sinning: the eye sees, the heart covets and the body commits the sin.
