Midrash Deuteronomy Rabbah 3:34
מעשה ברבי שמעון בן שטח שלקח חמור אחד מישמעאלי אחד
הלכו תלמידיו ומצאו בו אבן אחת טובה תלויה לו בצוארו
אמרו לו: ״רבי, ״בִּרְכַּת ה׳ הִיא תַעֲשִׁיר״ (משלי י,כב)
אמר להם רבי שמעון בן שטח: ״חמור לקחתי, אבן טובה לא לקחתי״
הלך והחזירה לאותו ישמעאלי
קרא עליו אותו ישמעאל: ״ברוך ה׳ אלהי שמעון בן שטח״
הוי מאמונתו של בשר ודם
את יכול לידע אמונתו של הקדוש ברוך הוא
שנאמן לשלם שכר טוב לישראל
… אבל מתן שכרן ״וְהָיָה עֵקֶב תִּשְׁמְעוּן״: בעקב אני פורע לכם
A story about R. Shimon ( שמעון ) b. Shatah, who acquired a donkey from
an Ishmaelite ( .(ישמעאלי
His students went and found a precious stone hanging from its neck.
They said to him, “Master: ‘It is the blessing of God that enriches’,” (Prov.
10:22).
R. Shimon b. Shatah said to them, “A donkey I purchased; a precious
stone I did not purchase.”
He went and returned it to that Ishmaelite.
That Ishmaelite called upon him, “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Shimon
b. Shatah.”
Thus from the trustworthiness of flesh and blood
you may know the trustworthiness of the Holy One Blessed be He
that He is trustworthy to pay good reward to Israel
… but the giving of reward, “And if you will heed” ( תִּשְׁמְעוּן ), will be in the
end:
