8 (12) lest when thou hast eaten and art replete, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt in them;

(13) and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold are multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;

(14) then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget the Lord thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Miżrayim, from the house of bondage;

(15) who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, in which were venomous serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought forth water for thee out of the rock of flint;

(16) who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might afflict thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

(17) and thou say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.

(18) But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he who gives thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he swore to thy fathers, as it is this day.

(19) And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that you shall surely perish.

(20) As the nations which the Lord destroys before your face, so shall you perish; because you would not be obedient to the voice of the Lord your God.

9 (1) Hear, O Yisra᾽el: Thou art to pass over the Yarden this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven,

(2) a people great and tall, the children of the ῾Anaqim, whom thou knowst, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of ῾Anaq!

(3) Understand therefore this day, that the Lord thy God is he who goes over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the Lord has said to thee.

(4) Speak not thou in thy heart, after the Lord thy God has cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land: and for the wickedness of these nations the Lord does drive them out from before thee.

(5) Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but on account of the wickedness of these nations the Lord thy God does drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the Lord swore to thy fathers, Avraham, Yiżĥaq, and Ya῾aqov.

(6) Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God gives thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

(7) Remember, and forget not, how thou didst provoke the Lord thy God to anger in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Miżrayim, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

(8) Also in Ḥorev you provoked the Lord to anger, so that the Lord was angry with you to have destroyed you.

(9) When I was gone up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I abode in the mountain forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water:

(10) and the Lord delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words which the Lord spoke with you in the mountain out of the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly.

(11) And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the Lord gave me the two tablets of stone, the tables of the covenant.

(12) And the Lord said to me, Arise, get thee down quickly from here; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Miżrayim have become corrupt; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image.

(13) And the Lord spoke to me saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

(14) let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they.

(15) So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain burned with fire: and the two tablets of the covenant were in my two hands.

(16) And I looked, and, behold, you had sinned against the Lord your God, and had made a molten calf: you had turned aside quickly out of the way which the Lord had commanded you.

(17) And I took the two tablets, and cast them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.
