(לג) וַיָּבִ֤יאוּ אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶת־הָאֹ֖הֶל וְאֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלָ֑יו קְרָסָ֣יו קְרָשָׁ֔יו בְּרִיחָ֖ו וְעַמֻּדָ֥יו וַאֲדָנָֽיו׃ (לד) וְאֶת־מִכְסֵ֞ה עוֹרֹ֤ת הָֽאֵילִם֙ הַמְאׇדָּמִ֔ים וְאֶת־מִכְסֵ֖ה עֹרֹ֣ת הַתְּחָשִׁ֑ים וְאֵ֖ת פָּרֹ֥כֶת הַמָּסָֽךְ׃ (לה) אֶת־אֲר֥וֹן הָעֵדֻ֖ת וְאֶת־בַּדָּ֑יו וְאֵ֖ת הַכַּפֹּֽרֶת׃ (לו) אֶת־הַשֻּׁלְחָן֙ אֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלָ֔יו וְאֵ֖ת לֶ֥חֶם הַפָּנִֽים׃ (לז) אֶת־הַמְּנֹרָ֨ה הַטְּהֹרָ֜ה אֶת־נֵרֹתֶ֗יהָ נֵרֹ֛ת הַמַּֽעֲרָכָ֖ה וְאֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלֶ֑יהָ וְאֵ֖ת שֶׁ֥מֶן הַמָּאֽוֹר׃ (לח) וְאֵת֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הַזָּהָ֔ב וְאֵת֙ שֶׁ֣מֶן הַמִּשְׁחָ֔ה וְאֵ֖ת קְטֹ֣רֶת הַסַּמִּ֑ים וְאֵ֕ת מָסַ֖ךְ פֶּ֥תַח הָאֹֽהֶל׃ (לט) אֵ֣ת ׀ מִזְבַּ֣ח הַנְּחֹ֗שֶׁת וְאֶת־מִכְבַּ֤ר הַנְּחֹ֙שֶׁת֙ אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ אֶת־בַּדָּ֖יו וְאֶת־כׇּל־כֵּלָ֑יו אֶת־הַכִּיֹּ֖ר וְאֶת־כַּנּֽוֹ׃ (מ) אֵת֩ קַלְעֵ֨י הֶחָצֵ֜ר אֶת־עַמֻּדֶ֣יהָ וְאֶת־אֲדָנֶ֗יהָ וְאֶת־הַמָּסָךְ֙ לְשַׁ֣עַר הֶֽחָצֵ֔ר אֶת־מֵיתָרָ֖יו וִיתֵדֹתֶ֑יהָ וְאֵ֗ת כׇּל־כְּלֵ֛י עֲבֹדַ֥ת הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן לְאֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃ (מא) אֶת־בִּגְדֵ֥י הַשְּׂרָ֖ד לְשָׁרֵ֣ת בַּקֹּ֑דֶשׁ אֶת־בִּגְדֵ֤י הַקֹּ֙דֶשׁ֙ לְאַהֲרֹ֣ן הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְאֶת־בִּגְדֵ֥י בָנָ֖יו לְכַהֵֽן׃ (מב) כְּכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶׁ֑ה כֵּ֤ן עָשׂוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת כׇּל־הָעֲבֹדָֽה׃ (מג) וַיַּ֨רְא מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־כׇּל־הַמְּלָאכָ֗ה וְהִנֵּה֙ עָשׂ֣וּ אֹתָ֔הּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהֹוָ֖ה כֵּ֣ן עָשׂ֑וּ וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֹתָ֖ם מֹשֶֽׁה׃ {פ}
(32) Thus was completed all the work of the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting. The Israelites did so; just as יהוה had commanded Moses, so they did. (33) Then they brought the Tabernacle to Moses, with the Tent and all its furnishings: its clasps, its planks, its bars, its posts, and its sockets; (34) the covering of tanned ram skins, the covering of dolphin skins, and the curtain for the screen; (35) the Ark of the Pact and its poles, and the cover; (36) the table and all its utensils, and the bread of display; (37) the pure lampstand, its lamps—lamps in due order—and all its fittings, and the oil for lighting; (38) the altar of gold, the oil for anointing, the aromatic incense, and the screen for the entrance of the Tent; (39) the copper altar with its copper grating, its poles and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand; (40) the hangings of the enclosure, its posts and its sockets, the screen for the gate of the enclosure, its cords and its pegs—all the furnishings for the service of the Tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting; (41) the service vestments for officiating in the sanctuary, the sacral vestments of Aaron the priest, and the vestments of his sons for priestly service. (42) Just as יהוה had commanded Moses, so the Israelites had done all the work. (43) And when Moses saw that they had performed all the tasks—as יהוה had commanded, so they had done—Moses blessed them.
(יז) וַיְהִ֞י בַּחֹ֧דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֛וֹן בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הוּקַ֖ם הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃ (יח) וַיָּ֨קֶם מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן וַיִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־אֲדָנָ֔יו וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶת־קְרָשָׁ֔יו וַיִּתֵּ֖ן אֶת־בְּרִיחָ֑יו וַיָּ֖קֶם אֶת־עַמּוּדָֽיו׃
(17) In the first month of the second year, on the first of the month, the Tabernacle was set up. (18) Moses set up the Tabernacle, placing its sockets, setting up its planks, inserting its bars, and erecting its posts.
ויביאו את המשכן וגו'. שֶׁלֹּא הָיוּ יְכוֹלִין לַהֲקִימוֹ; וּלְפִי שֶׁלֹּא עָשָׂה מֹשֶׁה שׁוּם מְלָאכָה בַמִּשְׁכָּן, הִנִּיחַ לוֹ הַקָּבָּ"ה הֲקָמָתוֹ, שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה יָכוֹל לַהֲקִימוֹ שׁוּם אָדָם מֵחֲמַת כֹּבֶד הַקְּרָשִׁים, שֶׁאֵין כֹּחַ בָּאָדָם לְזָקְפָן, וּמֹשֶׁה הֶעֱמִידוֹ; אָמַר מֹשֶׁה לִפְנֵי הַקָּבָּ"ה אֵיךְ אֶפְשָׁר הֲקָמָתוֹ עַ"יְ אָדָם? אָמַר לוֹ עֲסֹק אַתָּה בְּיָדְךָ, וְנִרְאֶה כִּמְקִימוֹ וְהוּא נִזְקָף וְקָם מֵאֵלָיו, וְזֶהוּ שֶׁנֶּ' הוּקַם הַמִּשְׁכָּן (שמות מ') – הוּקַם מֵאֵלָיו; מִדְרַשׁ רַ' תַנְחוּמָא:

ויביאו את המשכן וגו׳ AND THEY BROUGHT THE TABERNACLE [UNTO MOSES etc.], for they themselves were unable to erect it. Since Moses had done no work in the Mishkan, the Holy Blessed One left for him the task of erecting it, for nobody was able to set it up because of the weight of the boards which no human strength was capable of setting up. Moses, however, succeeded in placing it in position. Moses said to the Holy Blessed One “How is its erection possible by human beings?” God answered him: “You be busy with your hand!” He appeared to be erecting it, but in fact it set itself up and rose of its own accord. That is why Scripture says, (Exodus 40:17) “The Tabernacle was erected (הוקם)” — was erected by itself. This is a Midrash of Rabbi Tanchuma 2:11:11.

(ה) כֵּיוָן שֶׁגָּמְרוּ מְלֶאכֶת הַמִשְׁכָּן, הָיו יוֹשְׁבִין וּמְצַפִּין אֵימָתַי תָּבֹא שְׁכִינָה וְתִשְׁרֶה בוֹ, וְהָיוּ מִצְטַעֲרִין הַכֹּל מִפְּנֵי שֶׁלֹּא שָׁרְתָה שְׁכִינָה עָלָיו. מֶה עָשׂוּ. הָלְכוּ לָהֶם אֵצֶל חַכְמֵי לֵב, אָמְרוּ לָהֶן, וּמָה אַתֶם יוֹשְׁבִין, הַעֲמִידוּ אַתֶּם אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן וְתִשְׁרֶה שְׁכִינָה בֵּינוֹתֵינוּ. הָיוּ מְבַקְשִׁים לְהַעֲמִידוֹ, וְלֹא הָיוּ יוֹדְעִין וְלֹא יְכוֹלִין לְהַעֲמִידוֹ. וּכְשֶׁהֵן חוֹשְׁבִין לְהַעֲמִידוֹ, הוּא נוֹפֵל. מִיָּד הָלְכוּ לָהֶם אֵצֶל בְּצַלְאֵל וְאָהֳלִיאָב, אָמְרוּ לָהֶם, בּוֹאוּ אַתֶּם וְהַעֲמִידוּ הַמִשְׁכָּן שֶׁאַתֶּם עֲשִׂיתֶם אוֹתוֹ, שֶׁמָּא עַל יֶדְכֶם רָאוּי לַעֲמֹד. מִיָּד הִתְחִילוּ לְהַעֲמִידוֹ וְלֹא יָכֹלוּ. הִתְחִילוּ מְסִיחִין וּמְרַנְּנִין וְאוֹמְרִים: רְאוּ מֶה עָשָׂה לָנוּ בֶן עַמְרָם שֶׁהוֹצִיא אֶת מָמוֹנֵנוּ בַּמִּשְׁכָּן הַזֶה וְהִכְנִיס אוֹתָנוּ לְכָל הַטֹּרַח הַזֶּה וְאָמַר לָנוּ כִּי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא יוֹרֵד מִן הָעֶלְיוֹנִים וְשׁוֹרֶה בְּתוֹךְ יְרִיעוֹת עִזִּים, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וְשָׁכַנְתִּי בְּתוֹכָם (שמות כה, ח).

(ו) וְלָמָּה לֹא הָיוּ יְכוֹלִין לְהַעֲמִידוֹ. אֶלָּא שֶׁהָיָה מֹשֶׁה מֵצֵר עַל שֶׁלֹּא נִשְׁתַּתֵּף הוּא עִמָּהֶן בִּמְלֶאכֶת הַמִשְׁכָּן. כֵּיצַד, הַנְּדָבָה נִתְּנָה עַל יְדֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְהַמְּלָאכָה נַעֲשֵׂית עַל יְדֵי בְּצַלְאֵל וְאָהֳלִיאָב וְחַכְמֵי לֵב. וּלְפִי שֶׁהָיָה מֹשֶׁה מֵצֵר, הֶעְלִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא מֵהֶם וְלֹא הָיוּ יְכוֹלִין לְהַעֲמִידוֹ. כֵּיוָן שֶׁהֵטִיחוּ פְּנֵיהֶם מִכָּל מָקוֹם וְלֹא הָיוּ יְכוֹלִין לְהַעֲמִידוֹ, נִכְנְסוּ כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל אֵצֶל מֹשֶׁה, אָמְרוּ, מֹשֶׁה רַבֵּנוּ, כָּל מַה שֶּׁאָמַרְתָּ לָנוּ עָשִׂינוּ, וְכָל מַה שֶּׁצִּוִּיתָנוּ לִתֵּן וּלְהוֹצִיא נָתַנּוּ הַכֹּל, וַהֲרֵי כָּל הַמְּלָאכָה לְפָנֶיךָ, שֶׁמָּא חִסַּרְנוּ שׁוּם דָּבָר אוֹ וִתַּרְנוּ עַל כָּל מַה שֶּׁאָמַרְתָּ לָּנוּ, רְאֵה הַכֹּל לְפָנֶיךָ. וְהָיוּ מַרְאִין לוֹ כָּל דָּבָר וְדָבָר, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיָּבִיאוּ אֶת הַמִשְׁכָּן אֶל מֹשֶׁה וְגוֹ'. וּכְתִיב: וַיַּרְא מֹשֶׁה אֶת כָּל הַמְּלָאכָה וְגוֹ'.

(ז) אָמְרוּ לוֹ: לֹא כָךְ וְכָךְ אָמַרְתָּ לָנוּ לַעֲשׂוֹת. אָמַר לָהֶם: הֵן. וְכֵן עַל כָּל דָּבָר וְדָבָר. אָמְרוּ לוֹ: וְאִם כֵּן לָמָּה אֵינוֹ עוֹמֵד, שֶׁהֲרֵי כְּבָר נִצְטַעֲרוּ בְּצַלְאֵל וְאָהֳלִיאָב וְכָל חַכְמֵי לֵב לְהַעֲמִידוֹ וְלֹא הָיוּ יְכוֹלִין. וְהָיָה מֹשֶׁה מֵצֵר עַל דָּבָר זֶה, עַד שֶׁאָמַר לוֹ הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְמֹשֶׁה, לְפִי שֶׁהָיִיתָ מֵצֵר שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה לְךָ עֲשִׂיָּה וְלֹא חֵלֶק בִּמְלֶאכֶת הַמִשְׁכָּן, לְפִיכָךְ לֹא יָכְלוּ אוֹתָן חֲכָמִים לְהַעֲמִידוֹ, בִּשְׁבִילְךָ, כְּדֵי שֶׁיֵּדְעוּ כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל, שֶׁאִם עַל יָדְךָ אֵינוֹ עוֹמֵד, שׁוּב אֵינוֹ עוֹמֵד לְעוֹלָם, וְאֵינִי כוֹתֵב לוֹ הֲקָמָה אֶלָּא עַל יָדֶיךָ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיָּקֶם מֹשֶׁה אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן. וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר, וַיְדַבֵּר ה' אֶל מֹשֶׁה, בְּיוֹם הַחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ תָּקִים אֶת מִשְׁכַּן אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד. אָמַר מֹשֶׁה, רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם, אֵינִי יוֹדֵעַ לְהַעֲמִידוֹ. אָמַר לוֹ: עֲסֹק בְּיָדֶיךָ וְאַתָּה מַרְאֶה לְהַעֲמִידוֹ וְהוּא עוֹמֵד מֵאֵלָיו, וַאֲנִי כוֹתֵב עָלֶיךָ שֶׁאַתָּה הֲקֵמֹתוֹ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיְהִי בַּחֹדֶשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן בַּשָּׁנָה הַשֵּׁנִית בְּאֶחָד לַחֹדֶשׁ הוּקַם הַמִשְׁכָּן. וּמִי הֶעֱמִידוֹ. מֹשֶׁה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיָּקֶם מֹשֶׁה אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן.

(5) When at last they completed the work of the Tabernacle, they sat waiting for the Shekhinah to descend and hover over it. However, they were distressed because the Shekhinah failed to hover over it. What did they do then? They went to the wise-hearted men and said to them: “Why do you sit by idly? Erect the Tabernacle and the Shekhinah will come to rest among us.” They tried to erect the Tabernacle, but did not know how. They were unable to make it stand. Whenever they thought they had assembled it, it would fall apart. They went to Bezalel and Oholiav and said: “Come, erect the Tabernacle that you have constructed, perhaps you will be worthy to erect it.” They too tried to assemble it but were unable to do so. They began muttering and complaining, saying: “See what the Son of Amram did to us when he took our possessions for this Tabernacle, and made us assume this burden while promising us that the Holy Blessed One would descend from the heavenly sphere and would dwell within the curtain of goats’ hair, as is said: That I may dwell among them (Exod. 25:8).”

(6) Why were they unable to erect it? Because of the fact that Moses was distressed at not having participated in the construction of the Tabernacle. Why did that happen? The offerings were given by the Israelites, and the work was performed by Bezalel, Oholiav, and the wise-hearted. Because Moses was distressed, the Holy Blessed One concealed the way to erect it from them, and that is why they were unable to do so. After they had tried in every way to do so and still were unable to set it up, all the Israelites approached Moses saying: “Moses, our master, everything you told us we have done, and everything you asked us to bring and to give, we have given: Behold, all the work of the Tabernacle (Exod. 39:32). Perhaps we have overlooked something, or perhaps something else should be added to what you told us. See, everything is here,” and they showed it all to him, as it is said: And they brought the Tabernacle unto Moses (ibid., v. 33) and Moses saw all the work (ibid., v. 43).

(7) They said to him: “Did you not tell us to do such-and-such?” He replied: “Yes, indeed.” And so they pointed to everything that had been done. They said: “If that is so, why does it not stand? We tried to have Bezalel, Oholiav, and the wise-hearted erect it, but they were unable to do so.” Moses was troubled by all this until the Holy Blessed One told him: Moses, because you were unhappy over the fact that you did not share in the work of the building of the Tabernacle, these wise men are not able to erect it. Now Israel will know that if you do not erect it, it will never be set up. Have I not written previously that it would be done by you, as it is said: And Moses reared up the Tabernacle (Exod. 40:18)? And it says also: And the Lord spoke unto Moses, saying: And the first day of the first month (Nisan) shalt thou rear up the Tabernacle of the Tent of Meeting (ibid., v. 2). Moses replied: Master of the Universe, I do not know how to erect it either. He said to him: Apply yourself to it and it will stand up of itself, for I have written concerning you that you will raise it, as is said: And it came to pass in the first month in the second year on the first day of the month, that the Tabernacle was reared up (ibid., v. 17). Who finally set it up? Moses, as it is said: And Moses reared up the Tabernacle.

(לה) וְלֹא־יָכֹ֣ל מֹשֶׁ֗ה לָבוֹא֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד כִּֽי־שָׁכַ֥ן עָלָ֖יו הֶעָנָ֑ן וּכְב֣וֹד יְהֹוָ֔ה מָלֵ֖א אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן׃
(35) Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud had settled upon it and the Presence of יהוה filled the Tabernacle.

(ב) אֵלֶּה פְקוּדֵי הַמִּשְׁכָּן, וּכְתִיב אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל (שמות א, א) בֹּא וּרְאֵה כַּמָּה חִבֵּב הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן, שֶׁהִנִּיחַ אֶת הָעֶלְיוֹנִים וְשָׁכַן בְּתּוֹךְ הַמִּשְׁכָּן. אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, עִקַּר שְׁכִינָה בַּתַּחְתּוֹנִים הָיְתָה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ אֶת קוֹל ה' אֱלֹהִים מִתְהַלֵּךְ בַּגָּן (בראשית ג, ח). בָּא אָדָם וְחָטָא, נִסְתַּלְּקָה מִן הָאָרֶץ לַשָּׁמָיִם. עָמַד קַיִן וְהָרַג אֶת אָחִיו, נִסְתַּלְּקָה מִן הָרָקִיעַ הָרִאשׁוֹן לַשֵּׁנִי. עָמַד דּוֹר אֱנוֹשׁ וְהִכְעִיס לְפָנָיו, נִסְתַּלְּקָה מִן הַשֵּׁנִי לַשְּׁלִישִׁי. עָמַד דּוֹר הַמַּבּוּל וְהִשְׁחִית דַּרְכּוֹ, נִסְתַלְּקָה מִן הַשְּׁלִישִׁי לָרְבִיעִי. דּוֹר הַפְּלָגָה נִתְגָּאָה, נִסְתַּלְּקָה מִן רְבִיעִי לַחֲמִישִׁי. סְדוֹמִיִּים קִלְקְלוּ, נִסְתַּלְּקָה מִן הַחֲמִישִׁי לַשִּׁשִּׁי. עָמְדוּ אַמְרָפֶל וַחֲבֵרָיו, נִסְתַּלְּקָה מִן שִׁשִּׁי לַשְּׁבִיעִי. עָמַד אַבְרָהָם וְסִגֵּל מַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים, נִמְשְׁכָה הַשְּׁכִינָה מִן שְׁבִיעִי לַשִּׁשִּׁי. יִצְחָק מְשָׁכָהּ מִן שִּׁשִּׁי לַחֲמִישִׁי. יַעֲקֹב, מִן חֲמִישִׁי לָרְבִיעִי. לֵוִי בְּנוֹ, מִן רְבִיעִי לַשְּׁלִישִׁי. קְהָת בֶּן לֵוִי, מִן שְׁלִישִׁי לַשֵּׁנִי. עַמְרָם, מִן שֵׁנִי לָרִאשׁוֹן. מֹשֶׁה, בְּיוֹם שֶׁהוּקַם הַמִּשְׁכָּן, וּכְבוֹד ה' מָלֵא אֶת הַמִּשְׁכָּן. זֶהוּ שֶׁאָמַר הַכָּתוּב כִּי יְשָׁרִים יִשְׁכְּנוּ אָרֶץ (משלי ב, כא), יַשְׁכִּינוּ הַשְּׁכִינָה בָּאָרֶץ.

(2) These are the accounts of the Tabernacle. It is written elsewhere: Now these are the names of the sons of Israel (Gen. 46:8). Observe how very precious the Tabernacle was to the Holy Blessed One that God left the upper realms to dwell in the Tabernacle. Rabbi Simeon said that God dwelt in the lower realms (at first), as is said: And they heard the voice of the Eternal God walking in the garden (ibid. 3:8), but that after Adam sinned God ascended from earth to heaven. When Cain arose and killed his brother, God ascended from the first firmament to the second; when the generation of Enoch angered God, God ascended from the second to the third; when the generation of the flood perverted God's teaching, God ascended from the third to the fourth; when the generation of the separation (i.e., the Tower of Babel) became arrogant, God went from the fourth to the fifth sphere; when the Sodomites behaved immorally, God went from the fifth to the sixth; and when Amraphel and his companions appeared, God ascended from the sixth to the seventh. However, after Abraham came and performed good deeds, the Shekhinah descended from the seventh to the sixth firmament; after Isaac God went from the sixth to the fifth; after Jacob from the fifth to the fourth; after Levi, his son, from the fourth to the third; after Kohath the son of Levi, from the third to the second; after Amram from the second to the first; and on the day that Moses erected the Tabernacle: The glory of the Eternal filled the Tabernacle (Exod. 40:34). Scripture states: For the upright shall dwell in the land (Prov. 2:21). This should be read: “They caused the Shekhinah to dwell in the land.”

In 19th-century England, Varnishing Day was traditionally the time when artists arrived at an exhibition to put the finishing touches on their works and seal them with a coat of varnish. In the winter of 1835, J. M. W. Turner famously arrived at one such event, where he proceeded to squeeze lumps of color onto a half-finished canvas and, according to various accounts, work without a break, using his fingers and a palette knife to coax the surface to life. In the end, the painting Turner produced was one of two versions depicting the burning of the Houses of Parliament a few months earlier. It was a bravura performance in which the artist seemed utterly possessed as bystanders looked on in amusement and surprise. After a few hours, the artist packed up his paints and left without saying a word. As one contemporary reportedly commented, “He knows when it is done, and he is off.”

For Turner, the question of when a work of art was finished was evidently an easy one, as it is for a handful of artists today. But others—working in an array of mediums—find the issue of completion more complicated. Choosing when to stop altering a piece can be a highly individual decision, as idiosyncratic and personal as style, and there are instances in which a work is never fully done, at least in its creator’s mind.

Some say it’s a matter of physical removal. “For me, once the piece has left the studio, then I consider it finished,” says Mark Sheinkman, who uses a process of erasure to make large-scale, virtuosic paintings and drawings, which he shows at Von Lintel Gallery. “If the work is returned to me, unsold or for whatever reason, then I feel free to make changes. Once it’s gone out into the world, I don’t.”...

Mona Kuhn, represented by Flowers Gallery in London and New York, often bases her nude photographs on a place (such as Venice or Bordeaux), and a series can evolve over several years. She likens a project’s completion to childbirth: “When you feel that you are ready, you want to separate from it. You can’t take it anymore, and you have to push it out. And once it’s out, it takes on a life of its own.”...
