Noam Beit Midrash - Pirkei Avot and Theory of Education

(15) There are four types among those who sit before the sages: a sponge, a funnel, a strainer and a sieve.

-A sponge, soaks up everything;

-A funnel, takes in at one end and lets out at the other;

-A strainer, which lets out the wine and retains the dregs;

-A sieve, which lets out the coarse meal and retains the choice flour.

(6) Joshua ben Perachiah and Nittai the Arbelite received [the oral tradition] from them. Joshua ben Perachiah used to say: make for yourself a teacher, and acquire for yourself a companion and judge all people with the scale weighted in their favor.

He would say, a brute does not fear sin, one who is ignorant cannot be devout, one who is bashful does not learn, one who is impatient cannot teach, one who engages in commerce excessively does not become wise. And in a place where there are no people; strive to be a person.
