Abba Sikra, the head of the zealots of Jerusalem, was the son of Rabbi Yochanan Ben Zakai's sister. Rabbi Yochanan sent him a message, "Come privately to me." He came. Yochanan said to him, "Until when will you do this and kill the world with famine." He said to him, "What should I do? Since, if I say anything to them, they will kill me." He said to him,"Show me a solution for me, that I should get out; maybe there will be a small salvation from it." He said to him, "Act as if you are sick, and have everyone come and ask about you; and then bring something putrid and have it lay with you and they will say that you have died. And have your students bring you out and no other men should bring you out, so that we don't become aware that you are light, since they know that a living person is lighter than a dead one." He did this. Rabbi Eliezer carried him on one side and Rabbi Yehoshua on the other side. When they came to the opening, the zealot gate keepers wanted to stab him. They said to them, "The Romans will say, 'they stabbed their rabbi.'" Then they wanted to shake him. They said to them, "They will say, 'they shook their rabbi.'" They opened the gate. Leadership take-aways from Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai (and David Ben-Gurion)
- The ability to act within the constraints of realistic political options to achieve the primary moral goal, rather than to pursue unrealistic ambitions and risk ending up empty-handed
- The ability to recognize and seize a historic moment of opportunity that may never return in order to advance critical interests
- Fearless confrontation of contemporary currents or trends that threaten long-term stability, even at the cost of short-term conflict
- Refusing to sacrifice basic moral values in pursuit of military or political success

Make a Plan for the Transfer of Power: Lessons from Moshe and Joshua

When Moshe finds out that he won't be able to lead the people into the Promised Land, he tells God that there must be a succession plan. This is an important aspect of leadership: Moshe's first reaction is not to petition God for his own sake, but to insist that the people he has served will have someone to guide them.
It's also important to note that God doesn't just appoint someone; there's a public process, so that everyone will know that Joshua has been chosen, and that Moshe himself was involved in the transfer of leadership.
A Firm Leader with an Imperfect Past
Rav Yehuda said that Shmuel said: Why did the kingship of the house of Saul not continue on to succeeding generations? It is because there was no flaw in his ancestry; he was of impeccable lineage. As Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yehotzadak: One appoints a leader over the community only if he has a box full of creeping animals hanging behind him, i.e., he has something inappropriate in his ancestry that preceded him. Why is that? It is so that if he exhibits a haughty attitude toward the community, one can say to him: Turn and look behind you and be reminded of your humble roots. This is why David’s kingdom lasted while Saul’s did not, as David descended from a family with problematic ancestry, namely Tamar (see Genesis, chapter 38) and Ruth the Moabite (see Ruth 4:18–22). {Rav Yehuda in the name of Rav explains the Saul was punished because he did not insist on royal honor, i.e. he was too humble.} And Rabbi Yoḥanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yehotzadak: Any Torah scholar who does not avenge himself and bear a grudge like a snake when insulted is not considered a Torah scholar...
Take-aways:
- We should not expect our leaders - or their families - to be flawless. Having an imperfect record may actually be a requirement to qualify for a political or spiritual leader. But, to the extent possible, this "box of creeping animals" must be hanging from behind the leader, i.e. in the past.
- Leaders must be resolute and uphold their honor, if not for their own personal honor than for the honor of the position they hold.
Delegate: Fighting Amalek
(8) Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. (9) Moses said to Joshua, “Pick some men for us, and go out and do battle with Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill, with the rod of God in my hand.” (10) Joshua did as Moses told him and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. (11) Then, whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; but whenever he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. (12) But Moses’ hands grew heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur, one on each side, supported his hands; thus his hands remained steady until the sun set. (13) And Joshua overwhelmed the people of Amalek with the sword.
Take-aways:
- An effective leader recognizes the talents of others and enlists them to help in a meaningful way.
- An effective leader takes advice from others.
- Sometimes it is exhausting to be the leader. Ask for help! Don't feel like you have to do it alone.
Counter-Intuitive Leadership
(א) בֶּן זוֹמָא אוֹמֵר, אֵיזֶהוּ חָכָם, הַלּוֹמֵד מִכָּל אָדָם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (תהלים קיט) מִכָּל מְלַמְּדַי הִשְׂכַּלְתִּי כִּי עֵדְוֹתֶיךָ שִׂיחָה לִּי. אֵיזֶהוּ גִבּוֹר, הַכּוֹבֵשׁ אֶת יִצְרוֹ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (משלי טז) טוֹב אֶרֶךְ אַפַּיִם מִגִּבּוֹר וּמשֵׁל בְּרוּחוֹ מִלֹּכֵד עִיר. אֵיזֶהוּ עָשִׁיר, הַשָּׂמֵחַ בְּחֶלְקוֹ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (תהלים קכח) יְגִיעַ כַּפֶּיךָ כִּי תֹאכֵל אַשְׁרֶיךָ וְטוֹב לָךְ. אַשְׁרֶיךָ, בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה. וְטוֹב לָךְ, לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא. אֵיזֶהוּ מְכֻבָּד, הַמְכַבֵּד אֶת הַבְּרִיּוֹת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שמואל א ב) כִּי מְכַבְּדַי אֲכַבֵּד וּבֹזַי יֵקָלּוּ:
(1) Ben Zoma said:Who is wise? He who learns from every man, as it is said: “From all who taught me have I gained understanding” (Psalms 119:99). Who is mighty? He who subdues his [evil] inclination, as it is said: “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city” (Proverbs 16:3). Who is rich? He who rejoices in his lot, as it is said: “You shall enjoy the fruit of your labors, you shall be happy and you shall prosper” (Psalms 128:2) “You shall be happy” in this world, “and you shall prosper” in the world to come. Who is he that is honored? He who honors his fellow human beings as it is said: “For I honor those that honor Me, but those who spurn Me shall be dishonored” (I Samuel 2:30).
My take-aways:
- The strength of a leader is not measured by how much they can control others, but first and foremost, by how much they can control themselves.
- A leader should use their position to bring honor of those they represent, rather than to themselves.
- To this point and to the next, it's noticeable that Ben Zoma here does not possess the honored title of Rabbi.
- His name, which means "the Son of Zoma" also puts his name/essence in relationship with others.
- A leader is not necessarily "the smartest person in the room" and their position indicates one measure of expertise or achievement, but it's not absolute. They must know when and how to learn from others, even if they may be "lower" on the totem poll than the leader is.
- It's not sufficient for a leader to improve the economy in raw dollars and cents (shekels and agurot) if the community seeks something more or deeper. They must increase the morale and feeling of having and being "enough" as well.
- Do you agree with this sage advice? Does any of it surprise you? What points would you push back on? Which of these traits do you embody, and which could you work on?
