(1) Prayers upon Awakening

(2) Modeh Ani

(3) When waking up from sleep, before washing hands, one should say:

(4) I am thankful before You, living and enduring King, for you have mercifully restored my soul within me. Great is Your faithfulness.

What does the Book of Psalms say about thankfulness?

"Offer God thanks;

and fulfill your vows

to the Most High."

God desires bringing about a state of honesty, humility and thankfulness in our hearts,” she said. “Even the very name of the Jewish people is derived from the same three-letter root as thankfulness (Hey, Vav and Dalet as in ‘hodu’ ‘thank’). The word ‘Jewish’ (‘Yehudim’) translates as ‘thankful ones.’

There is a beautiful prayer called the “Modei Ani” prayer that is recited each morning upon awakening:

I offer thanks to You,

living and eternal King,

for You have mercifully restored

my soul within me;

Your faithfulness is great.”

While God desires thankfulness in our hearts, this gratitude is indeed a gift of kindness to each of us. Our life is all the more blessed when we are thankful each day.”
