(לג) וְשָׁ֣ם רָאִ֗ינוּ אֶת־הַנְּפִילִ֛ים בְּנֵ֥י עֲנָ֖ק מִן־הַנְּפִלִ֑ים וַנְּהִ֤י בְעֵינֵ֙ינוּ֙ כַּֽחֲגָבִ֔ים וְכֵ֥ן הָיִ֖ינוּ בְּעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃

Numbers 13:33

(33) we saw the Nephilim there—the Anakites are part of the Nephilim—and we looked like grasshoppers to ourselves, and so we must have looked to them.”

(ב) וכן היינו בעיניהם. שָׁמַעְנוּ אוֹמְרִים זֶה לָזֶה, נְמָלִים יֵשׁ בַּכְּרָמִים כַּאֲנָשִׁים (סוטה ל"ה): (ג) ענק. שֶׁמַּעֲנִיקִים חַמָּה בְּקוֹמָתָן (שם ל"ד):

Rashi on Numbers 13:33

AND SO WE MUST HAVE BEEN IN THEIR EYES — We heard them say one to another; “There are ants in the vineyards that look like human beings (Sotah 35a). (3) ענק — They were thus called because it seemed as if the sun was draped around their necks (מַעֲנִיקִים) because of their height (Sotah 34b).

Haamek Davar on Numbers 13:33

"We were as grasshoppers in our eyes" Our hearts fell. This was a sign to us that we could not conquer them as it says regarding Shaul (I Samuel 28), "And Shaul saw the Philistine camp and he was afraid and his heart trembled very much." That mean that since fear fell into his heart, his heart trembled, and this was a sign that he would not succeed. "And so were we in their eyes" for their hearts did not fall at all.

Ezra 3:12-13

(12) Many of the priests and Levites and the chiefs of the clans, the old men who had seen the first house, wept loudly at the sight of the founding of this house. Many others shouted joyously at the top of their voices. (13) The people could not distinguish the shouts of joy from the people’s weeping, for the people raised a great shout, the sound of which could be heard from afar.

(א) ביסדו. ביסוד שלו מן שם דבר של יוסד ומן יסד יאמר ביסדו, כמו מן חדש בחדשו מן קדש בקדשו: (ב) זה הבית. כשהיו רואין בניין בית זה היו בוכין מתוך שהיו זוכרים אותו בניין גדול של בית ראשון: (ג) ורבים. אשר לא ראו בניין בית ראשון היו שמחין ומריעין בשמחה בקול גדול מרוב שמחתן שיצאו מגלותן:

Rashi on Ezra 3:12

(2) This house. When they saw the building of this Temple they wept because they remembered the great first Temple. (3) Many. Those who had not seen the building of the first Temple were joyful and shouted with joy in a loud voice from the joy that came from their redemption.
