It is our obligation to praise
לַאֲדוֹן הַכֹּל the Master of all,
לָתֵת גְּדֻלָּה to ascribe greatness
לְיוֹצֵר בְּרֵאשִׁית to the Creator of the [world in the] beginning:
שֶׁלֹּא עָשָֽׂנוּ that He has not made us
כְּגוֹיֵי הָאֲרָצוֹת like the nations of the lands,
וְלֹא שָׂמָֽנוּ and has not positioned us
כְּמִשְׁפְּחוֹת הָאֲדָמָה like the families of the earth;
שֶׁלֹּא שָׂם that He has not assigned
חֶלְקֵֽנוּ כָּהֶם our portion like theirs,
וְגוֹרָלֵֽנוּ כְּכָל הֲמוֹנָם: nor our lot like that of all their multitudes.
For they prostrate themselves
לָהֶֽבֶל וָרִיק to vanity and nothingness,
וּמִתְפַּלְּ֒לִים אֶל אֵל לֹא יוֹשִֽׁיעַ, and pray to a god that cannot deliver.
But we bow, prostrate ourselves,
וּמוֹדִים and offer thanks
לִפְנֵי מֶֽלֶךְ מַלְ֒כֵי הַמְּ֒לָכִים before the Supreme King of Kings,
הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, the Holy One blessed is He,
Who spreads the heavens,
וְיוֹסֵד אָֽרֶץ, and establishes the earth,
וּמוֹשַׁב יְקָרוֹ בַּשָּׁמַֽיִם מִמַּֽעַל, and the seat of His glory is in heaven above,
וּשְׁ֒כִינַת עֻזּוֹ and the abode of His invincible might
בְּגָבְ֒הֵי מְרוֹמִים, is in the loftiest heights.
He is our God, there is nothing else.
Our King is true,
אֶֽפֶס זוּלָתוֹ all else is insignificant,
כַּכָּתוּב בְּתוֹרָתוֹ as it is written in His Torah:
וְיָדַעְתָּ הַיּוֹם “And You shall know this day
וַהֲשֵׁבֹתָ אֶל לְבָבֶֽךָ and take into Your heart
כִּי יְהֹוָה הוּא הָאֱלֹהִים that Adonoy is God
בַּשָּׁמַֽיִם מִמַּֽעַל in the heavens above
וְעַל הָאָֽרֶץ מִתָּֽחַת and upon the earth below;
אֵין עוֹד: there is nothing else.”
We therefore put our hope in You,
Adonoy our God,
לִרְאוֹת מְהֵרָה בְּתִפְאֶֽרֶת עֻזֶּֽךָ to soon behold the glory of Your might
לְהַעֲבִיר גִּלּוּלִים מִן הָאָֽרֶץ in banishing idolatry from the earth,
וְהָאֱלִילִים כָּרוֹת יִכָּרֵתוּן and the false gods will be utterly exterminated
לְתַקֵּן עוֹלָם to perfect the world
בְּמַלְכוּת שַׁדַּי as the kingdom of Shadai.
And all mankind will invoke Your Name,
לְהַפְנוֹת אֵלֶֽיךָ to turn back to You,
כָּל רִשְׁ֒עֵי אָֽרֶץ, all the wicked of the earth.
They will realize and know,
כָּל יוֹשְׁ֒בֵי תֵבֵל all the inhabitants of the world,
כִּי לְךָ תִכְרַע כָּל בֶּֽרֶךְ that to You, every knee must bend,
תִּשָּׁבַע כָּל לָשׁוֹן: every tongue must swear [allegiance to You].
Before You, Adonoy, our God,
יִכְרְעוּ וְיִפֹּֽלוּ, they will bow and prostrate themselves,
וְלִכְ֒בוֹד שִׁמְךָ יְקָר יִתֵּֽנוּ, and to the glory of Your Name give honor.
And they will all accept [upon themselves]
אֶת עֹל מַלְכוּתֶֽךָ, the yoke of Your kingdom,
וְתִמְלֹךְ עֲלֵיהֶם מְהֵרָה and You will reign over them, soon,
לְעוֹלָם וָעֶד, forever and ever.
For the kingdom is Yours,
וּלְ֒עֽוֹלְ֒מֵי עַד תִּמְלוֹךְ בְּכָבוֹד, and to all eternity You will reign in glory,
כַּכָּתוּב בְּתוֹרָתֶֽךָ as it is written in Your Torah:
יְהֹוָה יִמְלֹךְ לְעֹלָם וָעֶד: “Adonoy will reign forever and ever.”
And it is said:
וְהָיָה יְהֹוָה לְמֶֽלֶךְ “And Adonoy will be King
עַל כָּל הָאָֽרֶץ over the whole earth;
בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא יִהְיֶה יְהֹוָה אֶחָד on that day Adonoy will be One
וּשְׁמוֹ אֶחָד: and His Name One.”
Do not fear sudden terror
וּמִשֹּׁאַת רְשָׁעִים nor the destruction of the wicked
כִּי תָבֹא: when it comes.
Take counsel together and it will be foiled
דַּבְּ֒רוּ דָבָר וְלֹא יָקוּם speak the word and it will not stand
כִּי עִמָּֽנוּ אֵל: for God is with us.
To your old age I am [with you],
וְעַד שֵׂיבָה אֲנִי אֶסְבֹּל: to your older years I will sustain you,
I have made you, and I will carry you,
I will sustain you and save you.
Exalted and sanctified be His great Name
בְּעָלְ֒מָא דִּי בְרָא in the world which He created
כִרְעוּתֵהּ according to His will
וְיַמְלִיךְ מַלְכוּתֵהּ and may He rule His kingdom
וְיַצְמַח פּוּרְ֒קָנֵהּ bring forth His redemption
וִיקָרֵב (קֵץ) מְשִׁיחֵהּ and hasten the coming of His Mashiach
בְּחַיֵּיכוֹן וּבְיוֹמֵיכוֹן in your lifetime and in your days,
וּבְחַיֵּי and in the lifetime
דְכָל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, of the entire House of Israel,
בַּעֲגָלָא וּבִזְמַן קָרִיב speedily and in the near future—
וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן: and say Amein.
May His great Name be blessed
לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְ֒מֵי עָלְ֒מַיָּא: forever and for all eternity.
Blessed and praised,
וְיִתְפָּאַר וְיִתְרוֹמַם וְיִתְנַשֵּׂא glorified, and exalted and uplifted,
וְיִתְהַדָּר וְיִתְעַלֶּה וְיִתְהַלָּל honored and elevated and extolled
שְׁמֵהּ דְקוּדְשָׁא, בְּרִיךְ הוּא be the Name of the Holy One, blessed is He;
לְעֵֽלָּא (בעשי"ת וּלְ֒עֵֽלָּא מִכָּל) above (Ten Days of Penitence: far above)
מִן כָּל בִּרְכָתָא וְשִׁירָתָא, all the blessings and hymns,
תֻּשְׁבְּחָתָא וְנֶחֱמָתָא, praises and consolations
דַּאֲמִירָן בְּעָלְ֒מָא, וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן: which we utter in the world—and say Amein.
May there be abundant peace from heaven
וְחַיִּים טוֹבִים and good life
עָלֵֽינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל for us and for all Israel,
וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן: —and say Amein.
He Who makes peace
(Ten Days of Penitence: the peace)
בִּמְרוֹמָיו in His high heavens
הוּא יַעֲשֶׂה שָׁלוֹם may He, make peace
עָלֵינוּ וְעַל כָּל יִשְׂרָאֵל for us and for all Israel,
וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן and say, Amen.
The following is recited here by some congregations from the first day of Elul, through Shemini Atzeres. Others recite it at the end of the Maariv (Evening) Service.
By David:
Adonoy is my light and my salvation,
מִמִּי אִירָא whom shall I fear?
Adonoy is the strength of my life,
מִמִּי אֶפְחָד: of whom shall I be afraid?
When evildoers approach me
לֶאֱכֹל אֶת בְּשָׂרִי to devour my flesh—
צָרַי וְאֹיְ֒בַי לִי my tormentors and my foes
הֵֽמָּה כָשְׁ֒לוּ וְנָפָֽלוּ: they stumble and fall.
If an army should encamp against me,
לֹא יִירָא לִבִּי my heart would not fear;
אִם תָּקוּם עָלַי מִלְחָמָה if war were to rise against me,
בְּזֹאת אֲנִי בוֹטֵֽחַ: in this I trust.
One thing I request of Adonoy,
אוֹתָהּ אֲבַקֵּשׁ [only] that shall I seek,
שִׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית יְהֹוָה that I may dwell in the House of Adonoy
כָּל יְמֵי חַיַּי all the days of my life,
לַחֲזוֹת בְּנֹֽעַם יְהֹוָה to behold the pleasantness of Adonoy,
וּלְ֒בַקֵּר בְּהֵיכָלוֹ: and to meditate in His Sanctuary.
For He will hide me in His Tabernacle
בְּיוֹם רָעָה on the day of distress,
He will conceal me in the shelter of His Tent,
בְּצוּר יְרוֹמְ֒מֵֽנִי: upon a rock He will lift me.
And now my head is raised high
עַל אֹיְ֒בַי סְבִיבוֹתָי above my enemies around me;
וְאֶזְבְּחָה בְאָהֳלוֹ and I will offer in His Tent,
זִבְחֵי תְרוּעָה sacrifices accompanied by trumpets of joy;
I will sing and chant to Adonoy.
שְׁמַע יְהֹוָה קוֹלִי אֶקְרָא Adonoy, hear my voice when I call;
וְחָנֵּֽנִי וַעֲנֵֽנִי: be gracious to me and answer me.
Of You, my heart has said,
בַּקְּ֒שׁוּ פָנָי “Seek My Presence”;
Your Presence, Adonoy I will seek.
Conceal not Your Presence from me,
אַל תַּט בְּאַף עַבְדֶּֽךָ do not turn away Your servant in anger.
עֶזְרָתִי הָיִֽיתָ You have been my help;
אַל תִּטְּ֒שֵֽׁנִי וְאַל תַּעַזְ֒בֵֽנִי neither cast me off nor abandon me,
God of my deliverance.
When my father and mother abandon me,
Adonoy will gather me up.
Adonoy, teach me Your way,
וּנְ֒חֵֽנִי בְּאֹֽרַח מִישׁוֹר and lead me in the path of uprightness,
לְמַֽעַן שׁוֹרְ֒רָי: because of my watchers.
Do not deliver me
בְּנֶֽפֶשׁ צָרָי to the will of my tormentors,
כִּי קָֽמוּ בִי עֵֽדֵי שֶֽׁקֶר for false witnesses have risen against me,
וִיפֵֽחַ חָמָס: who breathe violence.
Had I not believed that I would see
בְּטוּב יְהֹוָה the goodness of Adonoy
בְּאֶֽרֶץ חַיִּים: in the land of living.
Hope to Adonoy,
חֲזַק וְיַאֲמֵץ לִבֶּךָ be strong and He will give you courage;
וְקַוֵּה אֶל יְהֹוָה: and hope to Adonoy.
