Like the preceding books of the Twelve Minor Prophets, the book of Zephaniah is short. The prophet’s name, detailed lineage, and period when he was active, all of which appear in the opening verse, provide the background for his prophecies. Zephaniah focuses on Judah and Jerusalem, and describes a large-scale regional breakdown. He calls upon the residents of Jerusalem to repent, reproves them for their sins, and finally offers consolation and comfort for the future.
