The Rock—from His [store] we have eaten—
Bless Him my faithful ones.44This verse corresponds to the phrase רַבּוֹתַי נְבָרֵךְ (See page 000) inviting the table companions to join together in saying Birchas Hamazon.
We have satisfied ourselves
וְהוֹתַֽרְנוּ and we have left over [some food],
כִּדְבַר יְהֹוָה. according to the word of Adonoy.45This phrase refers to 2 Kings 4:43, “For thus said Adonoy, ‘They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.’”
He nourishes His world,46The first stanza of this poem is based on the first blessing of Birchas Hamazon (See page 000).
רוֹעֵֽנוּ אָבִֽינוּ. our Shepherd our Father.
We have eaten His bread
וְיֵינוֹ שָׁתִֽינוּ. and His wine we drank.
Therefore, we give thanks to His Name,
וּנְהַלְּ֒לוֹ בְּפִֽינוּ. and praise Him with our mouths—
אָמַֽרְנוּ וְעָנִֽינוּ. saying and chanting:
There is nothing so holy as Adonoy.
Refrain:
The Rock—from His [store] we have eaten—
Bless [Him] my faithful ones.
We have satisfied ourselves
וְהוֹתַֽרְנוּ and we have left over [some food]
כִּדְבַר יְהֹוָה: according to the word of Adonoy.
With song and sound of thanksgiving
נְבָרֵךְ לֵאלֹהֵֽינוּ. we will bless our God,
עַל אֶֽרֶץ חֶמְדָּה טוֹבָה. for the land so desirably good47The second stanza relates to the second blessing of Birchas Hamazon (See page 000).
שֶׁהִנְחִיל that He parceled out as a heritage
לַאֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ. to our fathers.
[With] food and sustenance
הִשְׂבִּֽיעַ לְנַפְשֵֽׁנוּ. He satisfied our souls;
His kindliness overwhelmed us
וֶאֱמֶת יְהֹוָה. and Adonoy is truth.
Refrain:
The Rock—from His [store] we have eaten—
Bless [Him] my faithful ones.
We have satisfied ourselves
וְהוֹתַֽרְנוּ and we have left over [some food]
כִּדְבַר יְהֹוָה: according to the word of Adonoy.
Be compassionate with Your kindliness48The third stanza parallels the third blessing of Birchas Hamazon (See page 000.) Because these three stanzas so closely resemble the blessing of Bircchas Hamazon, some authorities warn against reciting this poem after the meal for one may thus technically fulfill his obligation to recite Birchas Hamazon. According to them, one should recite or sing the song only in mid- meal.
עַל עַמְּ֒ךָ צוּרֵֽנוּ. upon Your people; our Rock,
עַל צִיּוֹן מִשְׁכַּן כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ. upon Zion, the dwelling-place of Your Glory,
זְבוּל בֵּית תִּפְאַרְתֵּֽנוּ. the Abode, home of our splendors.
May the son of David, Your servant,
יָבֹא וְיִגְאָלֵֽנוּ. come and redeem us
רֽוּחַ אַפֵּֽינוּ the breath of our life—
מְשִֽׁיחַ יְהֹוָה. the anointed of Adonoy.
Refrain:
The Rock—from His [store] we have eaten—
Bless [Him] my faithful ones.
We have satisfied ourselves
וְהוֹתַֽרְנוּ and we have left over [some food]
כִּדְבַר יְהֹוָה: according to the word of Adonoy.
May the Temple be rebuilt,49The final stanza relates to the grace when recited over a full cup of wine.
עִיר צִיּוֹן תְּמַלֵּא. the city of Zion filled,
וְשָׁם נָשִׁיר שִׁיר חָדָשׁ. and there we will sing a new song,
וּבִרְנָנָה and with joyous singing
נַעֲלֶה. we will come up.50We will come up to Jerusalem with joyous singing. Jerusalem is an elevated city and the Temple is at the highest point of Jerusalem. Thus Jews always say “We are going up to Jerusalem.”
The Merciful One, the Sanctified One,
יִתְבָּרַךְ וְיִתְעַלֶּה. blessed and exalted,
עַל כּוֹס יַֽיִן מָלֵא. over a full cup of wine,
כְּבִרְכַּת יְהֹוָה. the bounty of Adonoy.
Refrain:
The Rock—from His [store] we have eaten—
Bless [Him] my faithful ones.
We have satisfied ourselves
וְהוֹתַֽרְנוּ and we have left over [some food]
כִּדְבַר יְהֹוָה: according to the word of Adonoy.
