כָּל מְקַדֵּשׁ שְׁבִיעִי Whoever sanctifies the seventh day
כָּרָאוּי לוֹ. as befits it,
כָּל שׁוֹמֵר שַׁבָּת כַּדָּת Whoever preserves the Sabbath properly
מֵחַלְלוֹ. so as not to desecrate it—
שְׂכָרוֹ הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד his reward is very great,
עַל פִּי פָעֳלוֹ. commensurate with his actions;
אִישׁ עַל מַחֲנֵֽהוּ each man in his camp,
וְאִישׁ עַל דִגְלוֹ. each man with his banner.24Numbers 1:52.
אוֹהֲבֵי יְהֹוָה הַמְחַכִּים Lovers of Adonoy, who yearn
בְּבִנְיַן אֲרִיאֵל. for the building of the Temple—
בְּיוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת שִֽׂישׂוּ וְשִׂמְחוּ on the Sabbath day be happy and rejoice,
כִּמְקַבְּ֒לֵי מַתַּן נַחֲלִיאֵל. as if receiving the gift of God's inheritance.
גַּם שְׂאוּ יְדֵיכֶם קֹֽדֶשׁ Also raise your hands in holiness
וְאִמְרוּ לָאֵל. and say to the Almighty:
בָּרוּךְ יְהֹוָה “Blessed is Adonoy
אֲשֶׁר נָתַן מְנוּחָה Who granted rest
לְעַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל. to His people Israel.”251 Kings 8:56
דּוֹרְ֒שֵׁי יְהֹוָה Seekers of Adonoy,
זֶֽרַע אַבְרָהָם אוֹהֲבוֹ. seed of Avrohom, His beloved,
הַמְאַחֲרִים לָצֵאת מִן הַשַּׁבָּת who delay departing from the Sabbath
וּמְמַהֲרִים לָבֹא. and rush to welcome it;
שְׂמֵחִים לְשָׁמְרוֹ who rejoice in preserving it
וּלְעָרֵב עֵרוּבוֹ. and to place its eiruv26An eiruv is the food which must be placed before the Shabbos in order to enable one to carry from one private domain into another. Without an eiruv the Sages forbade this carrying. An eiruv is also used to enable a person to walk beyond the 2,000-cubit Shabbos boundary.
זֶה הַיּוֹם עָשָׂה יְהֹוָה “This is the day Adonoy has made
נָגִֽילָה וְנִשְׂמְ֒חָה בוֹ. let us exult and rejoice in it.”27Psalms 118:24.
זִכְרוּ תּוֹרַת משֶׁה Remember the Torah of Moses,
בְּמִצְוַת שַׁבָּת גְּרוּסָה. which states the Sabbath commandment28Perfect observance of the Torah’s command to keep the Shabbos is impossible without the expositions of the Talmud, commentaries, and codes.—Etz Yosef
חֲרוּתָה לַיּוֹם הַשְּׁ֒בִיעִי engraved for the seventh day
כְּכַלָּה בֵּין רֵעוֹתֶֽיהָ מְשֻׁבָּצָה. like a bride adorned amid her friends.29The commandment of the Shabbos was engraved on the two tablets God gave Moses. As the fourth of the Ten Statements, it is surrounded by its sister-mitzvos.
טְהוֹרִים יִירָשֽׁוּהָ וִיקַדְּ֒שֽׁוּהָ Pure ones inherit it and sanctify it
בְּמַאֲמַר כָּל אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה. with the words, “All that He had made”30Genesis 1:31. —
וַיְכַל אֱלֹהִים בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁ֒בִיעִי “And God completed by the seventh day,
מְלַאכְתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה. His work that He had done.”31Genesis 2:2.
יוֹם קָדוֹשׁ הוּא It is a holy day,
מִבֹּאוֹ וְעַד צֵאתוֹ. from arrival till departure;
כָּל זֶֽרַע יַעֲקֹב יְכַבְּ֒דֽוּהוּ all the seed of Jacob honor it
כִּדְבַר הַמֶּֽלֶךְ וְדָתוֹ. according to the King's word and decree—
לָנֽוּחַ בּוֹ וְלִשְׂמֹֽחַ to rest on it and to rejoice
בְּתַעֲנוּג אָכוֹל וְשָׁתוֹ. with the pleasure of food and drink—
כָּל עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל “The entire congregation of Israel
יַעֲשׂוּ אוֹתוֹ. will do it.”32Exodus 12:47.
מְשֹׁךְ חַסְדְּ֒ךָ Extend Your kindness
לְיוֹדְ֒עֶֽיךָ to those who know You,
אֵל קַנֹּא וְנוֹקֵם. Almighty, jealous and vengeful.
נוֹטְ֒רֵי לַיּוֹם הַשְּׁ֒בִיעִי Those who keep the seventh day,
זָכוֹר וְשָׁמוֹר לְהָקֵם. “Recall” and “Preserve,”33There are two Scriptural versions of the Ten Commandments. The commandment of the Shabbos in Exodus 20 begins with the word זָכוֹר , recall, and in Deuteronomy 5 it begins with the word שָׁמוֹר , preserve.—Etz Yosef to fulfill,
שַׂמְּ֒חֵם בְּבִנְיַן שָׁלֵם grant them joy with rebuilt Jerusalem;34The proper observance of the Shabbos brings the ultimate redemption and the rebuilding of Jerusalem.—Siach Yitzchak
בְּאוֹר פָּנֶֽיךָ and with the light of Your countenance,
תַּבְהִיקֵם. make them radiant.
יִרְוְיֻן “Let them be sated
מִדֶּֽשֶׁן בֵּיתֶֽךָ from the abundance of Your House,
וְנַֽחַל עֲדָנֶֽיךָ and from the stream of Your delights
תַשְׁקֵם. give them drink.”35Psalms 36:9.
עֲזֹר לַשּׁוֹבְ֒תִים בַּשְּׁ֒בִיעִי Help those who abstain on the seventh day—
בֶּחָרִישׁ וּבַקָּצִיר from plowing and harvesting,
עוֹלָמִים. [may You help them] always.
פּוֹסְ֒עִים בּוֹ פְּסִיעָה קְטַנָּה Those who walk on it with short strides
סוֹעֲדִים בּוֹ and feast on it [eating three meals]
לְבָרֵךְ שָׁלשׁ פְּעָמִים. in order to bless [You] three times—
צִדְקָתָם תַּצְהִיר may their righteousness shine
כְּאוֹר שִׁבְעַת הַיָּמִים. like the light of the seven days.36When God created the world, He created a brilliant light that lasted only during the seven days of creation. God preserved it for the righteous to enjoy in the World to Come.—Etz Yosef
יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל “Adonoy, God of Israel,
אַהֲבַת תָּמִים. [grant] perfect love
יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל Adonoy, God of Israel
תְּשׁוּעַת עוֹלָמִים: [grant] eternal deliverance.”
