Upon the arrival of the child, all those present at the service rise and say:
בָּרוּךְ הַבָּא: Blessed is he that comes!
The Mohel takes the child, and placing it upon a designated seat which is called the Throne of Elijah and he says:
זֶה הַכִּסֵּא שֶׁל אֵלִיָּֽהוּ הַנָּבִיא This is the Throne of Elijah,
זָכוּר לַטּוֹב: may he be remembered for good.
לִישׁוּעָתְךָ קִוִּיתִי יְהֹוָה: For Your deliverance I have hoped, Adonoy.
שִׂבַּרְתִּי לִישׁוּעָתְךָ יְהֹוָה, I have longed for Your deliverance, Adonoy;
וּמִצְוֹתֶֽיךָ עָשִׂיתִי: and I have fulfilled Your commandments.
אֵלִיָֽהוּ מַלְאַךְ הַבְּרִית, Elijah, messenger of the circumcision!
הִנֵּה שֶׁלְךָ לְפָנֶֽיךָ, Behold, yours is now before you,
עֲמוֹד עַל יְמִינִי וְסָמְכֵֽנִי. stand at my right hand and support me.
שִׂבַּֽרְתִּי לִישׁוּעָתְךָ יְהֹוָה. I have longed for Your deliverance.
שָׂשׂ אָנֹכִי עַל אִמְרָתֶֽךָ, I am happy with Your word
כְּמוֹצֵא שָׁלָל רָב. like one who finds great gain.
שָׁלוֹם רָב Great is the peace
לְאֹהֲבֵי תוֹרָתֶֽךָ, of those who love Your Torah,
וְאֵין לָֽמוֹ מִכְשׁוֹל, and there is no stumbling for them.
אַשְׁרֵי תִּבְחַר Fortunate is he whom You choose
וּתְקָרֵב and bring near,
יִשְׁכּוֹן חֲצֵרֶֽיךָ, that he may dwell in Your courts.
All those present respond:
נִשְׂבְּעָה May we be satisfied
בְּטוּב בֵּיתֶֽךָ, with the goodness of Your House,
קְדוֹשׁ הֵיכָלֶֽךָ: the holy place of Your Sanctuary.
Before the Mohel performs the circumcision, the father of the child says:
הִנְנִי מוּכָן וּמְזוּמָן Behold, I am prepared and ready
לְקַיֵּם מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה to fulfill the positive commandment
שֶׁצִוַּֽנִי הַבּוֹרֵא יִתְבָּרַךְ commanded me by the Creator, blessed is He,
לָמוֹל אֶת בְּנִי: to circumcise my son.
The Mohel takes the child and proclaims:
אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא The Holy One, blessed is He, said
לְאַבְרָהָם אָבִֽינוּ, to our father, Abraham,
הִתְהַלֵּךְ לְפָנַי וֶהְיֵה תָמִים. “Walk before me and be perfect.”
הִנְנִי מוּכָן וּמְזֻמָּן Behold, I am prepared and ready
לְקַיֵּם מִצְוַת עֲשֵׂה to fulfill the positive commandment
שֶׁצִּוָּֽנוּ הַבּוֹרֵא יִתְבָּרַךְ that the Creator, blessed is He,
לָמוֹל: commanded us to circumcise.
The Mohel places the child upon the knees of the Sandek, and before performing the actual circumcision, he says:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה Blessed are You, Adonoy
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, our God, King of the Universe,
אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו Who sanctified us with His commandments,
וְצִוָּֽנוּ and commanded us
עַל הַמִּילָה: concerning the circumcision.
As the Mohel performs the act of circumcision the father of the child says:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה Blessed are You, Adonoy
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, our God, King of the Universe,
אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו Who sanctified us with His commandments,
וְצִוָּֽנוּ לְהַכְנִיסוֹ and commanded us to bring him
בִּבְרִיתוֹ שֶׁל אַבְרָהָם אָבִֽינוּ: into the covenant of our father, Abraham.
All those present proclaim:
אָמֵן. Amein!
כְּשֵׁם שֶׁנִּכְנַס לַבְּרִית, Even as he has entered into the covenant,
כֵּן יִכָּנֵס לְתּוֹרָה so may he enter into the [study of] Torah,
וּלְחֻפָּה וּלְמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים: chupah [the nuptial canopy], and good deeds.
One of the distinguished relatives or guests is given the honor of reciting the following Berachos:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה Blessed are You, Adonoy
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, our God, King of the verse,
בּוֹרֵא פְּרִי הַגָּֽפֶן: Who creates the fruit of the vine.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה Blessed are You, Adonoy
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם, our God, King of the Universe,
אֲשֶׁר קִדַּשׁ יְדִיד Who sanctified [Isaac] the beloved one,
מִבֶּֽטֶן, from birth,
וְחוֹק בִּשְׁאֵֽרוֹ שָׂם, and set Your statute in his flesh,
וְצֶאֱצָאָיו חָתַם and sealed his offspring
בְּאוֹת בְּרִית קֽוֹדֶשׁ, with the sign of the holy covenant.
עַל כֵּן בִּשְׂכַר זֹאת, Therefore, on this account,
אֵל חַי חֶלְקֵֽנוּ צוּרֵֽנוּ, living Almighty, our Portion, our Rock,
צַוֵּה לְהַצִּיל give the command to rescue
יְדִידוּת שְׁאֵרֵֽנוּ the beloved soul within our flesh
מִשַּֽׁחַת. from destruction,
לְמַֽעַן בְּרִיתוֹ for the sake of His covenant
אֲשֶׁר שָׂם בִּבְשָׂרֵֽנוּ. that He has set in our flesh.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְיָ, Blessed are You, Adonoy,
כּוֹרֵת הַבְּרִית: Maker of the covenant.
Another distinguished relative or guest is given the honor of announcing the name of the child.
אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ וֵאלֹהֵי אֲבוֹתֵֽינוּ, Our God and God of our fathers,
קַיֵּם אֶת הַיֶּלֶד הַזֶּה preserve this child
לְאָבִיו וּלְאִמּוֹ to his father and his mother,
וְיִקָּרֵא שְׁמוֹ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל and let his name be called in Israel
(פלוני) בֶּן (the child's Hebrew name) son of
(פלוני) (father's Hebrewname).
יִשְׂמַח הָאָב בְּיוֹצֵא חֲלָצָיו, May his father rejoice in his offspring
וְתָגֵל אִמּוֹ and may his mother exult
בִּפְרִי בִטְנָהּ. in the fruit of her womb;
כַּכָּתוּב, as it is written:
יִשְׂמַח אָבִֽיךָ וְאִמֶּֽךָ “Let your father and your mother rejoice,
וְתָגֵל יוֹלַדְתֶּֽךָ. and let her who gave birth to you exult.”1Proverbs 23:25.
וְנֶאֱמַר, And it is said:
וָאֶעֱבוֹר עָלַֽיִךְ “And I passed by you
וָאֶרְאֵךְ מִתְבּוֹסֶֽסֶת בְּדָמָֽיִךְ, and saw you staggering in your blood,
וָאֹֽמַר לָךְ בְּדָמַֽיִךְ חֲיִי, ‘and I said to you, In your blood live!'
וָאֹֽמַר לָךְ בְּדָמַֽיִךְ חֲיִי. ‘And I said to you, in your blood live!'”2 Ezekiel 16:6.
וְנֶאֱמַר, And it is said:
זָכַר לְעוֹלָם בְּרִיתוֹ, “He remembered His covenant forever,
דָּבָר צִוָּה the word which He commanded
לְאֶֽלֶף דּוֹר. to a thousand generations.
אֲשֶׁר כָּרַת אֶת אַבְרָהָם Which He made as a treaty with Abraham,
וּשְׁבוּעָתוֹ לְיִשְׂחָק and which was His oath to Isaac.
וַיַּעֲמִידֶֽהָ לְיַעֲקֹב לְחוֹק, And He established it for Jacob as a statute,
לְיִשְׂרָאֵל בְּרִית עוֹלָם. for Israel as an everlasting covenant.”3Psalms 105:8-10.
וְנֶאֱמַר, And it is said:
וַיָּמָל אַבְרָהָם אֶת יִצְחָק בְּנוֹ “Abraham circumcised his son Isaac
בֶּן שְׁמוֹנַת יָמִים, when he was eight days old,
כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּה אֹתוֹ אֱלֹהִים: as God had commanded him.”4Genesis 21:4.
הוֹדוּ לַיהֹוָה כִּי טוֹב, Thank Adonoy for He is good,
כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ for His kindness endures forever.
הוֹדוּ לַיהֹוָה כִּי טוֹב, Thank Adonoy, for He is good,
כִּי לְעוֹלָם חַסְדּוֹ for His kindness endures forever.
זֶה הַקָּטוֹן This little child—
(פלוני) (child's Hebrew name)
בֶּן (פלוני) son of (father's Hebrew name)
גָדוֹל יִהְיֶה, may he become great.
כְּשֵׁם שֶׁנִכְנַס לַבְּרִית, Even as he entered into the covenant,
כֵּן יִכָּנֵס לְתּוֹרָה so may he enter into the [study of] Torah,
וּלְחֻפָּה וּלְמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים: chupah [the nuptial canopy] and good deeds.
The person who recited the Berachos drinks some wine,
The Mohel blesses the child:
מִי שֶׁבֵּרַךְ אֲבוֹתֵינוּ He who blessed our fathers,
אַבְרָהָם יִצְחָק וְיַעֲקֹב, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
הוּא יְבָרֵךְ may He bless
אֶת הַיֶּֽלֶד רַךְ הַנִּימוֹל this tender, circumcised child
(פלוני) (child's Hebrew name)
בֶּן (פלוני) son of (father's Hebrew name)
וְיִשְׁלַח לוֹ רְפוּאָה שְׁלֵמָה, and grant him a complete recovery,
בַּעֲבוּר שֶׁנִּכְנַס לַבְּרִית. because he has entered into the covenant.
וּכְשֵׁם שֶׁנִּכְנַס לַבְּרִית And even as he has entered into the covenant,
כֵּן יִכָּנֵס לְתוֹרָה, so may he enter into the [study of] Torah,
וּלְחֻפָּה, וּלְמַעֲשִׂים טוֹבִים. chupah [the nuptial canopy] and good deeds.
וְנֹאמַר אָמֵן: And let us [all] say Amein.
The Mohel and the father of the child recite this prayer:
רִבּוֹנוֹ שֶׁל עוֹלָם, Master of the Universe,
יְהִי רָצוֹן מִלְּפָנֶֽיךָ, may it be Your will
שֶׁיְּהֵא that he be
חָשׁוּב וּמְרֻצֶּה considered and regarded favorably,
וּמְקֻבָּל לְפָנֶֽיךָ, and accepted before You,
כְּאִלּוּ הִקְרַבְתִּֽיהוּ as though I had offered him
לִפְנֵי כִּסֵּא כְבוֹדֶֽךָ. before the Throne of Your Glory.
וְאַתָּה בְּרַחֲמֶֽיךָ הָרַבִּים, שְׁלַח And May You in Your abundant mercy send
עַל יְדֵי מַלְאָכֶֽיךָ הַקְּדוֹשִׁים through Your holy angels
נְשָׁמָה קְדוֹשָׁה וּטְהוֹרָה, לִבְנִי a holy and pure soul to my son
(פלוני) (Child's Hebrew name)
בֶּן (פלוני) son of (father's Hebrew name)
הַנִּימוֹל עַתָּה who was now circumcised
לְשִׁמְךָ הַגָּדוֹל, for Your great Name.
וְשֶׁיִּהְיֶה לִבּוֹ פָּתֽוּחַ And may his heart be as open
כְּפִתְחוֹ שֶׁל אוּלָם, as the Temple entrance,
בְּתוֹרָתְךָ הַקְּדוֹשָׁה, to be receptive to Your holy Torah,
לִלְמֹד וּלְלַמֵּד, לִשְׁמֹר to learn it, to teach it, to observe it
וְלַעֲשׂוֹת. and to perform [its commandments).
וְתֶן לוֹ אֲרִיכוּת יָמִים וְשָׁנִים, Grant him long days, years,
חַיִּים שֶׁל יִרְאַת חֵטְא, a life of fear of sin,
חַיִּים שֶׁל עֹֽשֶׁר וְכָבוֹד, a life of richness and honor,
חַיִּים שֶׁתְּמַלֵּא a life in which You will fulfill
מִשְׁאֲלוֹת לִבּוֹ לְטוֹבָה. the wishes of his heart for good.
אָמֵן וְכֵן יְהִי רָצוֹן: Amein, may it so be Your will.
