ג The third letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Its name is ‘Gimel’; so called in allusion to the ancient Heb. form of this letter, representing the neck of a גָּמָל (= camel). In PBH it has the numerical value three. ג alternates with כ and with ק; cp. e.g. גנן and כנן; גָּבִיעַ (= cup) and Arab. qub‘a (= calyx); גָּדִישׁ, Aram.–Syr. גְּדִישָׁא (= heap) and Arab. kadis (of s.m.); גּוּמָץ (= pit) and Aram. כּוּמְצָא, קּוּמְצָא (of s.m.); גָּפְרִית (= brimstone), Aram. כֻּבְרִיתָא, Syr. כֶּבְרִיתָא, and Arab. kibrit (of s.m.); זְגוּגִית and Aram. זְכוּכִיתָא; מִגְבָּעָה and כּוֹבַע, קוֹבַע (= helmet); מזג and מסך; סגר and סכר; רגל and רכל.
