וְ, וּ conj. and (BH וְ), used mostly as in Heb., except that there is no ו ‘consecutive’;—and, connecting both words (Dn 2:5) and sentences (ib.). When three or more words are connected together, וְ may connect them all (Dn 2:6, 10; 4:34; 5:18), or only the two last (2:17; 3:4; 4:4 Ezr 6:9), or the three last (Dn 2:37; 3:21), or be omitted altogether (2:27; 5:11, cf. 3:2 Ezr 4:9). וְ also connects vbs., in cases where BH would use וַ ·, as Dn 4:2; 5:29; 6:17, 25; in such cases a pf. is often followed by a ptcp., as Dn 2:7 עֲנוֹ וְאָֽמְרִין, so v 10; 3:9, 16, 24 +, hence in 2:5, 8, 15, 20 and often read prob. with Nö GGA 1884, 1021 עֲנָה וְאָמַר (for עָנֵה). Special senses:—
a. and that Dn 4:10, 12, 20; Ezr 6:8, 9 (cf. Dn 2:16, 18); and also Dn 6:29; = with, 7:1.
b. connecting contrasted ideas, but Dn 2:6; 3:6, 18; 4:4.
c. = and so, Dn 2:49; 6:2, especially after imv. 2:4, 9, 24, or impf. 2:7.
d. to express an intention Dn 5:2 וְיִשְׁתּוֹן that they might drink: after a command, etc., even with ptcp. or perf., nearly = that, 2:13; 6:2 (cf. K§ 102).
e. introducing the pred. (cf. BH 5 c), Dn 7:20 וְקִרְנָא דִכֵּן וְעַיְנִין לַהּ and this horn, it had eyes; but the case is isolated, and del. prob. וְ with Marti.
