It was
further
stated
that the
amora’im
discussed a similar problem, with regard to the
two Festival days of Rosh HaShana. Rav and Shmuel both said:
An egg
laid on this
day
is prohibited on that one,
as the two days of Rosh HaShana have a special status.
As we learned
in a mishna (
Rosh HaShana
30b):
Initially,
the court
would accept testimony of
witnesses who saw the new moon to establish the first day of
the
new
month…
Beitzah 4b:13
After discussing stringencies resulting from customs, the Gemara elaborates on the second day of a Festival observed in the Diaspora.
Rav Safra said to Rabbi Abba:
Communities in a situation
like us, who,
based on calculations, already
know the determination of the month
and are no longer concerned lest the Festival be observed on the wrong day, clearly, on the second day of a Festival,
we do not perform labor in the settled area due to
the need to avoid
deviation
that causes
dispute…
Pesachim 51b:8-52a:1
Thus, the principles governing this matter can be summarized as follows: Whenever the distance between Jerusalem and a particular place exceeds a ten-day journey, the inhabitants should observe [the holidays] for two days, as was their previous custom. For the messengers sent out for Tishrei [cannot be guaranteed] to reach places other than those within a ten-day journey from Jerusalem.
[The following rules apply when, by contrast,] places are a ten-day journey or less from Jerusalem, and thus it is possible that the messengers could have reached them: We see whether that place is [located…
Mishneh Torah, Sanctification of the New Month 5:11-12
The two days observed in the diaspora are considered two separate expressions of holiness and are not considered to be a single [extended] day. Therefore, an entity that was considered
muktzeh
on the first day, or first came into existence on the first day, is permitted on the second day if it was designated [for use on that day].
What is implied? An egg that was laid on the first day of a holiday may be eaten on the second. [Similarly,] beast or fowl that were trapped on the first day may be eaten on the second day…
Mishneh Torah, Rest on a Holiday 1:24
And the root of this commandment and all of its content is written in a previous commandment — which is the first day of Pesach (Sefer HaChinukh 298). However it is fitting, my son, that I elucidate for you the matter of two days for each and every appointed time, whereas our Torah only obligated us one holiday — as it is written explicitly about Peasch (Leviticus 23:7-8), “On the first day, a holy occasion,” and “on the seventh day”; and so with [Shavuot] and Rosh Hashanah and Sukkot. And the truth is that the matter today is only a custom — [and] not [from] any other obligation…
Sefer HaChinukh 301:2-4
The above concepts applied only when the High Court of
Eretz Yisrael
would sanctify [the new moon] based on the observation [of witnesses], and the Jews in the diaspora would celebrate two days [as a holiday] to avoid the doubt, for they did not know the date on which the inhabitants of
Eretz Yisrael
sanctified [the new moon]. At present, however, the inhabitants of
Eretz Yisrael
follow a fixed calendar and sanctify [the months accordingly]. Therefore, the second day of a holiday is [observed], not to avoid a doubt, but [to perpetuate] a custom…
Mishneh Torah, Rest on a Holiday 6:14-15
MISHNAH:
In addition, Rebbi Jehudah says that a person may stipulate about a basket on the first day and eat from it on the second; similarly an egg which was laid on the first may be eaten on the second; but the Sages did not agree with him.
HALAKHAH:
“And he says if today is holiday my words should be void but he gives a name to his tithes but does not eat from it. On the second [day] he gives a name to his tithes and eats from it.” Rav’s argument seems inverted. There he treats it as one sanctity but here he treats it as two sanctities…
Jerusalem Talmud Eruvin 3:9:1-2
On each and every one of these eight days, the entire
Hallel
is recited. Before [its recitation], one should recite the blessing "...who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to complete the
Hallel
." This applies whether the recitation is individual or communal.
Even though the reading of the
Hallel
is a mitzvah ordained by the Sages, one may recite the blessing [stating] "who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us," as one recites a blessing for the reading of the Megillah and for the erection of an
eruv

Mishneh Torah, Scroll of Esther and Hanukkah 3:5
Rebbi Abba, Rebbi Ḥiyya in the name of Rebbi Joḥanan:
My mother’s sons bore ill-will against me,
(etc.) [
they made me a guard of the vineyards; my vineyard I did not guard
.] What caused me to guard the vineyards? Because
my vineyard I did not guard
. What caused me to keep two days in Syria? Because I did not keep one day in the Land. I was thinking that I would be rewarded for both, but I am rewarded only for one. What caused me to separate two
ḥallot
in Syria? Because I did not separate one
ḥallah
in the Land…
Jerusalem Talmud Eruvin 3:9:3
Scripture then mentions the festivals (v. 4). The Torah says,
even these are My appointed seasons
, with regard to the Sabbath and
in their appointed season
with regard to the festivals. The meaning of
in their appointed season
is, in any day of the week in which they fall. Note, I will now lay down a general rule with regard to the festivals. During the time of the Temple the festivals were in the hands of the Beth Din. Do you not see that Scripture says,
For the king had taken counsel
(II Chron. 30:2), with regard to the Passover proclaimed by Hezekiah…
