The Gemara
raises an objection
to this from a
baraita
that discusses the verse: “While the earth remains, planting and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease” (Genesis 8:22). The
baraita
interprets this verse as referring to six seasons of the year:
Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says in the name of Rabbi Meir, and similarly, Rabbi Shimon ben Menasya would say in accordance with his statement:
The second
half of Tishrei,
all of
Marḥeshvan, and
the first
half of Kislev
are the days of
planting.
…
Bava Metzia 106b:5-6
עוד כל ימי הארץ וגו' לא ישבתו WHILE THE EARTH REMAINETH … SHALL NOT CEASE — Of these six seasons each consists of two months, as we have learned (Bava Metzia 106b): Half of Tishri, Marcheshvan and half of Kislev is seedtime; half of Kislev, Tebeth and half of Shebat is the cold-season. קור COLD-SEASON is more severe than חורף winter. חורף WINTER is the time of sowing barley and pulse which are quick (חריף) to ripen. It is half of Shebat, Adar and half of Nisan.
Rashi on Genesis 8:22:1-3
Come
and
hear
a challenge from a
baraita
to the previous opinion with regard to the size of the world: The size of
Egypt was four hundred parasangs by four hundred parasangs, and Egypt is one-sixtieth
of the size
of Cush, and Cush is one-sixtieth of the world, and the world is one-sixtieth
the size
of the Garden
of Eden,
and the Garden
of Eden
is one-sixtieth of Eden, and Eden is one sixtieth
of the size
of Gehenna.
Therefore,
it is found that the entire world is like a pot cover…
Pesachim 94a:9
With regard to the dates of these festivals,
the Sages taught: When Adam the first
man
saw
that
the day was progressively diminishing,
as the days become shorter from the autumnal equinox until the winter solstice, he did not yet know that this is a normal phenomenon, and therefore he
said: Woe
is
me; perhaps because I sinned the world is becoming dark around me and
will ultimately
return to
the primordial state of
chaos and disorder. And this is the death that was sentenced upon me from Heaven…
