“It is the sound of my beloved knocking” – by means of Moses when he said: “Moses said: So said the Lord: At about midnight, I will emerge in the midst of Egypt” (Exodus 11:4). “Open for me” – Rabbi Yasa said: The Holy One blessed be He said to Israel: My children, open for Me one opening of repentance like the eye of the needle, and I will open for you openings that wagons and carriages enter through it.
Rabbi Tanḥuma, Rabbi Ḥunya, and Rabbi Abbahu [said] in the name of Reish Lakish: It is written: “Desist…
Shir HaShirim Rabbah 5:2:2
Rabbi Miasha said: Cain was born, and his wife, his twin-sister, with him. Rabbi Simeon said to him: Has it not already been said, "And if a man shall take his sister, his father's daughter, or his mother's daughter, and see her nakedness, and she see his nakedness; it is a shameful thing"? (Lev. 20:17). From these words know that there were no other women whom they could marry, and these were permitted to them, as it is said, "For I have said, The world shall be built up by love" (Ps. 89:2). With love was the world built up before the Torah had been given…
Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer 21:3
“An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of the bush. He looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, but the bush was not consumed” (Exodus 3:2).
“An angel of the Lord appeared to him” – that is what is written: “I am asleep, but my heart is awake” (Song of Songs 5:2). I am asleep from the mitzvot, but my heart is awake to perform them. “My perfect one [
tamati
]” (Song of Songs 5:2) at Sinai, as they had perfect faith [
shenitamemu
] with Me at Sinai, and they said: “Everything that the Lord spoke…
Shemot Rabbah 2:5
“Twins of a gazelle” – Rabbi Yehoshua of Sikhnin in the name of Rabbi Levi: Just as these twins, when one of them withdraws from the breast, the breast is blocked, so it is written: “I will eliminate the three shepherds in a single month” (Zechariah 11:8). But is it not so that they died only within the same year? Rather, in a single month, the decree was issued regarding the three of them. That is what is written: “The great ones of the people were gathered” (Psalms 47:10).
Rabbi Yosei says: Three great providers arose for Israel, and these are: Moses, Aaron, and Miriam…
Shir HaShirim Rabbah 4:5:2
“In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Aḥashverosh, he had cast a
pur
, that is, the lot, before Haman for each day and for each month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar” (Esther 3:7).
“In the first month, that is, the month Nisan” – it is taught: When the wicked Haman sought to eliminate Israel, he said: ‘How can I gain control over them? I will cast lots.’ The Holy Spirit cried out: “Over My people they cast lots” (Joel 4:3). The Holy One blessed be He said to him: ‘Wicked one son of wicked one, your lot is drawn to be hanged…
Esther Rabbah 7:11
§ The Gemara continues its discussion of Jacob’s family.
Abba Ḥalifa Karoya asked Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba: In the total
tally of Jacob’s family members who descended to Egypt,
you find seventy,
as stated in the verse: “All the souls of the house of Jacob, that came into Egypt, were seventy” (Genesis 46:27). By contrast,
in their individual
listing, when the family members of each of his sons are listed by name,
you find seventy-less-one.
How can this be resolved? Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Abba
said to him: A twin
sister
was
born
with Dinah…
Bava Batra 123a:21
ויאמר ה׳ לה
, G'd said to her, etc.
Although this verse has been explained by many there is still no truly satisfactory answer. G'd responded to her fear that she would miscarry by explaining to her that there was nothing medically wrong in her womb but that she was carrying two instead of merely one fetus. Whereas normally, when a mother expects twins, the two fetuses get along inside the womb (compare Song of Songs 7,4), in Rebeccah's case they did not. Hence her feeling of being crushed…
Or HaChaim on Genesis 25:23:1
“She gave birth once again, to his brother Abel. Abel was a shepherd, and Cain was a cultivator of the ground” (Genesis 4:2).
“She gave birth once again, to his brother Abel” – this supports Rabbi Yehoshua ben Korḥa, who said: Two entered the bed and seven descended. “She gave birth once again, to his brother Abel” – she gave birth once again, but did not become pregnant once again.
“Abel was a shepherd, and Cain was a cultivator of the ground” – there were three people who were enthusiastic about the earth, but ultimately their efforts were of no avail…
Bereshit Rabbah 22:3
“It was as she had difficulty in her childbirth, the midwife said to her: Fear not; for this too is a son for you” (Genesis 35:17).
“It was as she had difficulty in her childbirth…” – two students of Rabbi Yehoshua changed their outer garment during a time of persecution. A Roman officer encountered them and said to them: ‘If you are sons of the Torah, give your lives for its sake. If you are not its sons, why should you be killed for its sake?’ They said to him: ‘We are its sons, and we are [willing to be] killed for its sake; however, it is not the way of people to commit suicide…
Bereshit Rabbah 82:8
“Rebecca lifted her eyes, she saw Isaac, and she fell from upon the camel” (Genesis 24:64).
“Rebecca lifted her eyes, she saw Isaac” – Rav Huna said: She saw that his hand was outstretched in prayer. She said: ‘He is certainly a great man,’ and that is why she inquired about him.
“She fell [
vatipol
] from upon the camel” – she tilted herself downward, just as it says: “When he stumbles [
yipol
], he will not fall” (Psalms 37:24).
“She said to the servant: Who is that man who is walking in the field toward us? The servant said: He is my master…
