Jewish tradition associates the brutal killing of ten great Torah scholars by the Romans with punishment of Joseph's brothers for selling him. Though not all at the same time, the executions were all around the time of the Hadrianic persecutions aimed at crushing Jewish opposition to Roman rule. The Ten Martyrs included R. Yishmael, Rabban [Shimon b.] Gamliel, R. Yeshavav, R. Yehudah b. Bava, R. Chutzpit the Interpreter, R. Yehuda the Baker, R. Hananyah b. Teradion and R. Akiva.
