The Gemara comments:
And this is as Reish Lakish says: The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: Is it not enough for the wicked that they treat My
die for
a
sela
coin as if it were
ownerless [
pumbi
],
using it without My permission and against My will, as they impregnate women adulterously?
But
moreover, they also
trouble Me and cause Me to sign
the result of their actions
against My will,
as I form the fetus and give it life, even when its creation is the result of prohibited sexual intercourse.
Avodah Zarah 54b:17
The Gemara asks:
Granted,
everyone agrees that one may not flay an animal from its feet
on a Festival, as one
who does so
exerts effort that is not fit for
the Festival.
But
with regard to
a firstborn
offering,
who
is the
tanna
who
taught
that flaying from its feet is prohibited?
Temurah 24a:17
The gentiles
say before Him: Master of the Universe, give us
the Torah
afresh and we will perform
its mitzvot.
The Holy One, Blessed be He, says to them
in response:
Fools of the world!
Do you think you can request this?
One who takes pains on Shabbat eve will eat on Shabbat,
but
one who did not take pains on Shabbat eve, from where will he eat on Shabbat?
The opportunity for performing mitzvot has already passed, and it is now too late to ask to perform them…
Avodah Zarah 3a:10
§ The Gemara expounds another verse involving Abraham:
“And the Lord appeared to him by the terebinths of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day”
(Genesis 18:1). The Gemara asks:
What
is the meaning of
“the heat of the day”? Rabbi Ḥama, son of Rabbi Ḥanina, says: That day was the third day after Abraham’s circumcision, and the Holy One, Blessed be He, came to inquire
about the well-being
of Abraham. The Holy One, Blessed be He, removed the sun from its sheath in order not to bother that righteous one with guests,
i.e…
Bava Metzia 86b:17
When the
New Moon of Av occurs on Shabbat, they read as the
haftara
the portion that includes the verse
“Your New Moons and your Festivals, My soul hated; they were a burden to Me”
(Isaiah 1:14). The Gemara asks:
What is
the meaning of:
“They were a burden to Me”?
The Gemara explains:
The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: It is not enough for the Jewish people that they sin before Me, but
in addition,
they burden Me to reconsider what harsh decree I shall bring upon them,
for they are petitioning Me to annul those decrees.
Megillah 31b:1
Ben Zoma
would say: A good guest, what does he say? How much effort did the host expend on my behalf, how much meat did
the host
bring before me. How much wine did he bring before me. How many loaves [
geluskaot
] did he bring before me. All the
effort
that he expended, he expended only for me. However, a bad guest, what does he say? What effort did the host expend? I ate
only
one
piece of
bread, I ate
only
one piece of meat
and
I drank
only
one cup
of wine…
Berakhot 58a:5
Rava said: This is the reasoning of Beit Shammai: A man will not bother to make a marriage feast and
then
lose it.
If the wife is entitled to refuse him even after the marriage, the man will not be willing to marry a minor and bear the expenses of the wedding, when it is uncertain that she will stay with him.
And Beit Hillel
reason as follows:
The marriage is convenient for both of them
even if it is nullified later,
so as to generate publicity about them that
they are
married.
Yevamot 107a:11
This teaches that a man must not say: “I will eat and drink and enjoy the good things of life, but I will not work, for heaven will protect me.” It is said:
Thou hast blessed the work of his hands
(Job 1:10). Hence, a man must work and labor with both hands before the Holy One, blessed be He, will send his blessing.
Midrash Tanchuma, Vayetzei 13:2
And they came and asked Rabbi
Yehuda HaNasi what they should do,
and he said: Since they have prayed, they have prayed,
and they need not pray again. Although they prayed erroneously, their mistake is not reversible and what was done remains. The Gemara responds:
A community is different
in
that we do not burden them
to pray again.
Berakhot 27b:8
“They shall craft an Ark of acacia wood: its length shall be two and a half cubits, and its width a cubit and a half, and its height a cubit and a half” (Exodus 25:10).
“They shall craft an Ark of acacia wood,” that is what is written: “The Almighty, we cannot find Him; He is exalted in power” (Job 37:23). Our great rabbi said: We must give credit to Job, as everything that Elihu said, he came and added to his statements. Job said to his comrades: ‘What do you think, that everything you have said is all His praise? Who can relate all the praise and mighty deeds of the Holy One…
Shemot Rabbah 34:1
Rabbi Elazar ben Perata
disagrees and
says: The manna caused even items that the gentile merchants sold them to be
completely
digested,
so that even other food that they ate produced no waste.
But
then
how do I establish
the verse:
“And you shall have a spade among your weapons”? After they sinned,
the manna was not as effective.
The Holy One, Blessed be He, said: I
initially
said
that
they would be like ministering angels
who do not produce waste…
Yoma 75b:13-14
With regard to one’s intent during prayer,
it was taught
in a
baraita
that
Rabbi Yehuda said: This was the custom of Rabbi Akiva, when he would pray with the congregation he would shorten
his prayer
and go up, due to
his desire to avoid being an
encumbrance on the congregation
by making them wait for him to finish his prayer.
But when he prayed by himself
he would extend his prayers to an extent that
a person would leave
Rabbi Akiva alone
in one corner
of the study hall
and
later
find him
still praying
in another corner…
Berakhot 31a:18
The Gemara cites proof that it is permitted to allow others to mislead themselves. It is
like this
incident
when Mar Zutra, son of Rav Naḥman, was going from
the city of
Sikhra to
the city of
Bei Meḥoza, and
at the same time
Rava and Rav Safra were going to Sikhra. They met each other,
and Mar Zutra
thought they were coming
out to greet
him. He said to them: Why did the Rabbis exert
themselves
and come all this
way to greet me?
Rav Safra said to him: We did not know that the Master was coming…
Chullin 94b:13
The Gemara comments:
Even according to the one who said
that
one day in a year is considered a year, it is different here,
with regard to rental
halakhot
,
as a person does not take the trouble to rent a house for less than thirty days.
Therefore, if one rented a house after the first of Adar, the remaining days of Adar are not considered a full year.
Rosh Hashanah 7b:4
“These too are the proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah, king of Judea, copied”
(Proverbs 25:1), indicating that Hezekiah taught Torah and disseminated it to the multitudes.
And
is it conceivable that
Hezekiah, king of Judea, taught Torah to the entire world and to Manasseh his son he did not teach Torah? Rather,
Hezekiah certainly taught Manasseh much Torah; nevertheless,
from all his exertion to
teach
him and from all his toil to
teach
him,
it was
only afflictions
that
elevated him to
the path of
good…
Sanhedrin 101b:1
Rather, if it was stated, this
is how
it was stated: Rav Yehuda said
that
Shmuel said: Due to what
reason
did
the Sages in the mishna
say
that
a virgin is married on Wednesday?
It is so
that if
the husband
had a claim concerning
the bride’s
virginity, he would go early
the next day
to court
and make his claim. The Gemara asks:
But
if that is the reason,
let her marry on Sunday, as
then too,
if
the husband
had a claim concerning
the bride’s
virginity…
Ketubot 2a:5
Rabbi Azarya in the name of Rabbi Yehuda bar Simon interpreted the verse regarding Isaiah. Isaiah said: ‘I was at leisure in my study hall, and I heard the voice of the Holy One blessed be He saying: “Whom shall I send and who will go for us?” (Isaiah 6:8). [God said:] I sent Micah, and they were striking him on his cheek. That is what is written: “With a rod they strike on the cheek” (Micah 4:14). I sent Amos and they would call him stutterer, as Rabbi Pinḥas said: Why was his name called Amos? It was because he was cumbrous [
amus
] of tongue…
Vayikra Rabbah 10:2
In summary of this
halakha
, the Gemara states that
Rava authorized
the Sage
Mar Shmuel,
from the house of the Exilarch, to deliver a public lecture,
and
the latter
taught: One may invite a gentile
for a meal
on Shabbat, but one may not invite a gentile
for a meal
on a Festival
as
a preventive measure, lest he
come to cook
more for his sake.
It is related about
Mareimar and Mar Zutra
that
when a gentile would happen
to come
to their
house
on a Festival…
Beitzah 21b:11
The Gemara answers:
Yes, it is indeed so;
this would work equally as well.
But the Sages did not burden him this much,
requiring him to prepare two boards where one suffices.
Eruvin 10b:8
Another matter, “a bull, or a sheep, or a goat” – that is what is written: “My people, what have I done to you, and how did I exhaust you? Testify against Me” (Micah 6:3). Rav Aḥa said: “Testify against Me” and receive a reward, but “you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor” (Exodus 20:13) and [if you do, you will] receive for it a reckoning in the future.
Rabbi Shmuel bar Naḥman said: On three occasions, the Holy One blessed be He entered into a dispute [
nitvake’aḥ
] with Israel…
