Rav Huna bar Ḥinnana said
that
Ḥiyya bar Rav said: The
halakha
is in accordance with
the opinion of
Rabbi Yehuda, who said
it
in the name of
his mentor,
Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya. Rav Ḥiyya bar Avin said to him: You have spoken well, as
proven by what
Shmuel said: In all my days I have never prayed the additional prayer as an individual
Berakhot 30a:19
“Though his exaltedness ascends to the heavens, and his head reaches the clouds” (Job 20:6) – “though his exaltedness ascends to the heavens” – his stature; “and his head reaches the clouds” – until it reaches the clouds. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Rabbi Ḥanina and Rabbi Yehuda ben Rabbi Simon said in the name of Rabbi Elazar: He created him [Adam] filling the entire world from east to west, as it is stated: “Back and front You shaped me” (Psalms 139:5). From north to south, from where is it derived? “[From the day God made Adam on the earth…
Bereshit Rabbah 21:3
It is taught
in a
baraita
:
Rabbi Akiva said: Once I was traveling on a boat, and I saw a certain boat sinking at sea, and I was grieved over
the apparent death of
the Torah scholar who was on board. And who was it? Rabbi Meir. But when I disembarked at the province of Cappadocia, he came, and sat, and deliberated before me about
halakha
. I said to him: My son, who brought you up
from the water?
He said to me:
One
wave carried me to another, and that other
wave
to another, until
I reached the shore, and a wave
cast me up onto dry land…
Yevamot 121a:20
The Gemara asks:
If so, even one who marries a widow
should
also
be exempt, as he too is engaged in the performance of a mitzva. That, however, contradicts the
baraita
. The Gemara responds that there is a distinction between one marrying a virgin and one marrying a widow.
One who marries a virgin is preoccupied
by his concern lest he discover that his bride is not a virgin, while
one who marries a widow is not preoccupied.
The Gemara asks:
And wherever
one
is preoccupied is he indeed exempt? But if
that is
so…
Sukkah 25a:8-10
And if
a wealthy
man comes before the heavenly court, the members of the court
say to him: Why did you not engage in Torah? If he says: I was wealthy and preoccupied with
managing
my possessions, they say to him: Were you any wealthier than Rabbi Elazar,
who was exceedingly wealthy and nevertheless studied Torah?
They said about Rabbi Elazar ben Ḥarsum that his father left him
an inheritance of
one thousand villages on land, and corresponding to them, one thousand ships at sea…
Yoma 35b:9-11
Avimi, son of Rabbi Abbahu, taught: There is
a type of son
who feeds his father pheasant [
pasyonei
] and
yet this behavior
causes him to be removed from the World,
i.e., the World-to-Come;
and there is
one
who makes him grind with a millstone,
which is difficult work,
Kiddushin 31a:14
The Gemara now cites additional teachings relating to the drinking of wine.
Rami bar Abba said:
Walking a
path of a
mil
, and
similarly,
sleeping
even
a minimal amount,
will
dispel the
effect of
wine
that one has drunk.
Rav Naḥman said
that
Rabba bar Avuh said: They only taught
this with regard to one
who has drunk a quarter-
log
of wine,
but
with regard to
one who has drunk more than a quarter-
log
, this advice is not useful…
Eruvin 64b:4
After Reish Lakish continually bothered them with his comments, Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Zarnokei and Rabbi Shimon ben Yehotzadak
said: This one is a nuisance.
In order to rid themselves of him,
when they reached
the location where they intended to intercalate the year,
they went up to the roof
and
took the ladder out from under them
so that he would stay below and would not be able to join them.
Sanhedrin 26a:16
Similarly,
Rava said to the Sages
who would attend his study hall:
I implore you; during
the months of
Nisan and Tishrei,
the crucial agricultural periods,
do not appear before me.
Engage in your agricultural work then
so that you will not be preoccupied with your sustenance all year.
Berakhot 35b:9
“The Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken” (Genesis 3:23).
“The Lord God sent him out of the Garden of Eden” – Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Neḥemya, Rabbi Yehuda said: He sent him out of the Garden of Eden in this world, and he [also] sent him out of the Garden of Eden of the World to Come. Rabbi Neḥemya said: He sent him out of the Garden of Eden in this world, but not that of the World to Come. According to Rabbi Yehuda’s opinion, He dealt with him harshly. According to Rabbi Neḥemya’s opinion, He dealt with him mercifully…
Bereshit Rabbah 21:7
“Baal Ḥanan son of Akhbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead, and the name of the city was Pa’u and his wife’s name was Mehetavel, daughter of Matred, daughter of Mei Zahav” (Genesis 36:39).
“Baal Ḥanan died” – Rabbi Levi and Rabbi Simon, Rabbi Levi said: They would adorn [their] gods [
metivei elohot
]. “Mehetavel” – they would adorn themselves for idol worship. “Daughter of Matred” – they would erect castles [
turiyot
] for idol worship. Rabbi Simon said: They would adorn women…
