The Gemara notes:
And Rav also held
that the blessing over
the mitzva of
lulav
is recited
all seven
days, and one recites the blessing even on the six days when the mitzva is by rabbinic law,
as Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Ashi said
that
Rav said: One who lights a Hanukkah light must recite a blessing. Rabbi Yirmeya said: One who sees
a burning
Hanukkah light must recite a blessing. What blessings does one recite? Rav Yehuda said:
On the
first day
of Hanukkah,
the one who lights recites three
blessings: To light the Hanukkah light…
Sukkah 46a:8
After the issue of whether lighting accomplishes the mitzva or placing accomplishes the mitzva was raised in the context of the previous discussion, the Gemara cites the discussion in its entirety.
As a dilemma was raised before
the Sages: In the case of the Hanukkah light, does
lighting accomplish
the
mitzva,
and placing the lit lamp is simply a continuation of that action,
or
does
placing
the kindled lamp
accomplish
the
mitzva,
and lighting is simply a practical necessity that facilitates placing the lamp?…
Shabbat 22b:5-23b:3
Rav Huna said:
Those
wicks and oils with which the Sages said
that
one may not light
the lamp
on Shabbat, one may not light
the lamp
with them on Hanukkah
either;
both
when it falls
on Shabbat and
when it falls
during the week. Rava said: What is the reason
for
Rav Huna’s
statement?
He holds
that if the Hanukkah light
becomes extinguished,
even though one lit it properly,
one is bound
to attend to it and relight it so that it will burn properly…
Shabbat 21a:12-22a:5
The Gemara relates that
Rav Yosef’s wife would kindle the
Shabbat lights
late. Rav Yosef said to her: Wasn’t it taught
in a
baraita
with regard to the verse:
“The pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, departed not
from before the people”
(
Exodus 13:22), this
teaches that the pillar of cloud would overlap
with
the pillar of fire?
The pillar of fire would appear slightly before nightfall.
And the pillar of fire
would
overlap
with
the pillar of cloud,
as well…
Shabbat 23b:5
The Gemara concludes:
And the
halakha
is
that these days
were nullified, and the
halakha
is
that
they were not nullified.
The Gemara asks: This
is difficult,
as one
halakha
contradicts
the
other
halakha
.
The Gemara answers:
It
is
not difficult. Here,
it is referring to
Hanukkah and Purim.
These Festival days were never nullified, and Hanukkah is listed among the Festivals of
Megillat Ta’anit
.
There…
Rosh Hashanah 19b:3
How many candles should one light on Chanukah? The mitzvah is that a single candle should be lit in each and every house, regardless of whether there are many members of the household, or merely one person [lives] there.
A person who performs the mitzvah in a beautiful and conscientious manner should light candles for every member of the household, whether male or female.
A person who is even more conscientious in his performance of the mitzvah than this and observes the mitzvah in the most desirable manner should light candles for every member of his household…
Mishneh Torah, Scroll of Esther and Hanukkah 4
Accordingly, the Sages of that generation ordained that these eight days, which begin from the twenty-fifth of Kislev, should be commemorated to be days of happiness and praise [of God]. Candles should be lit in the evening at the entrance to the houses on each and every one of these eight nights to publicize and reveal the miracle.
These days are called Chanukah. It is forbidden to eulogize and fast on them, as on the days of Purim. Lighting the candles on these days is a Rabbinic mitzvah, like the reading of the Megillah.
Mishneh Torah, Scroll of Esther and Hanukkah 3:3
GEMARA:
Ravina said in the name of Rava: Conclude from Rabbi Yehuda’s
statement that
the mitzva is to place the Hanukkah lamp within
a height of
ten
handbreadths from the ground
as, if it enters your mind
to say that the mitzva can also be fulfilled by placing it
above ten handbreadths, why did Rabbi Yehuda say that
in the case of
a Hanukkah lamp
placed outside, the storekeeper is
exempt? Let
the owner of the camel
say to
the storekeeper:
You should have placed
the lamp
above the
height
of a camel and its…
Bava Kamma 62b:3-5
The Gemara cites additional disputes between Rav and Shmuel:
Rav says: One may not light from
one Hanukkah
lamp to
another Hanukkah
lamp. And Shmuel says: One may light from
one Hanukkah
lamp to
another Hanukkah
lamp.
Menachot 41b:7
The Gemara expresses surprise at this statement:
Is that so? But didn’t Abaye say:
With regard to
all the
customs
of my Master,
Rabba,
he would act in accordance with
the opinion of
Rav, except for these three
instances, in which
he acted in accordance with
the opinion of
Shmuel:
Rabba maintained that
one
may
untie
ritual fringes [
tzitzit
]
from
one
garment
and tie them
to
another
garment,
contrary to Rav’s opinion that this constitutes a disgrace of the mitzva…
Pesachim 101a:7
On the 25th of Kislev (start) the eight days of Hanukkah, and they are prohibited for eulogizing and fasting, but are permitted for doing work. The women have made it a custom not to do work while the candles are burning. And there is [an opinion] that says that we may not be lenient for them. The many meals which we add on [these days] are voluntary meals, since [the Sages] did not establish them as [days of] feasting and joy. Rem"a: But some say that there is somewhat of a mitzvah in adding meals, because during those days was the Dedication of the Altar (Abraham Kara of Prague)…
