Joseph and Benjamin
Sources
A
Hence Joseph and Benjamin represent the two Righteous Ones. Joseph merited to be the (symbol of the) Righteous One on high in virtue of his having kept under guard the sign of the holy covenant. Benjamin was the Righteous One below, so that the Sabbatical septennate was crowned between Righteous Ones, to wit, Joseph the righteous and Benjamin the righteous.
Zohar, Vayetzei 17:134
“From the day my brother Joseph disappeared, my father forsook his bed, and sat and slept only on the ground. Furthermore, whenever I saw my brothers sitting side by side, while I was forced to sit alone, my eyes welled up with tears.” At that moment, Joseph’s compassion toward him was stirred, as it is said:
And Joseph made haste; for his heart yearned for his brother
(Gen. 43:30). R. Nahman the son of Isaac explained: He then arranged a banquet for them at which he decided to have Benjamin sit at his side, but he did not know, at first, how to accomplish it…
Midrash Tanchuma, Vayigash 4:8-9
וחמש חליפות שמלות, “and five sets of garments.” One on account of the garments that he had caused him to tear, the second one because he was his full brother, son of his mother. The third set as compensation for having made him, appear like a thief. The last two sets as the penalty a thief has to pay, i.e. twice the value of the goods he has stolen. An alternate explanation: The gift Binyamin received was worth five times as much as that given to his brothers.
Chizkuni, Genesis 45:22:3
Before continuing its midrashic interpretation of the rest of the book of Esther, the Gemara expounds a verse concerning Joseph that relates to the Megilla:
“To all of them he gave each man changes of clothing, but to Benjamin he gave
three hundred pieces of silver, and
five changes
of clothing” (Genesis 45:22). The Gemara asks:
Is it possible that in the
very
thing from which that righteous man
Joseph
had suffered,
as his father’s show of favoritism toward him aroused the enmity of his brothers,
Megillah 16a:24
Observe that if a man is jealous for the Holy One, blessed be He, the angel of death has no power over him as he has over other men, and to him is given the covenant of peace, as it is said regarding Phinehas: “Wherefore say: Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace” (Num. 25, 12).
Zohar, Vayigash 8:87
