The Sages taught
in a
baraita
:
One may smear oil
on
and rub
the
intestinal
area
on Shabbat
to ease pain, and it is not prohibited as a form of healing.
One may whisper incantations of snakes and scorpions on Shabbat
to ease the pain of their bite.
And one may pass
a cool
vessel upon
an infected
eye on Shabbat,
to soothe the inflammation.
Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel says: In what
case
are these matters stated?
They are stated
in
the case of
a vessel that
may
be moved
on Shabbat…
Sanhedrin 101a:5
When a person has been bitten by a scorpion or a snake, it is permitted to recite incantations over the bite. [This is permitted] - even on the Sabbath - in order to settle his mind and strengthen his feelings. Even though [the incantations] are of no avail, since the victim's life is in danger, permission was granted lest he become overly disturbed.
Mishneh Torah, Foreign Worship and Customs of the Nations 11:11
One who slaughters in the name of the sun, the name of the moon, the name of the stars, the name of the [zodiacal] constellations, for the sake of Michael, minister of the great army, or for the sake of a small worm, behold, [in all those cases] this is [considered like] the meat of offerings to the dead, [from which benefit is forbidden (see Hullin 40a:2)]. One may not slaughter [so that the blood runs] either into the seas, or into the rivers (Hullin 2:9), or into murky water, but he may slaughter [so that the blood flows] into a goblet of water…
Tosefta Chullin 2:6
The
baraita
relates an incident illustrating this point. There was
an incident involving ben Dama, son of Rabbi Yishmael’s sister,
in
which a snake bit him. And
following the attack,
Ya’akov of the village of Sekhanya,
who was a heretic, a disciple of Jesus the Nazarene,
came to treat him, but Rabbi Yishmael did not let him
do so.
And
ben Dama
said to him: Rabbi Yishmael, my brother, let him
treat me,
and I will be healed by him. And I will cite a verse from the Torah
to prove
that
accepting medical treatment from a heretic
is…
Avodah Zarah 27b:6-7
It happened that Eleazar ben Dama was bitten by a snake and Jacob from Kefar-Sama came to heal him in the name of Jesus ben Pandera, but Rebbi Ismael prevented him. He told him, I shall bring a proof that he can heal me. He could not bring proof before he died. Rebbi Ismael said to him, you are blessed, ben Dama, that you left this world in peace and did not tear down the fences of the Sages, as it is written,
he who tears down a fence will be bitten by a snake
. But did not a snake bite him? But that it will not bite him in the Future World…
Jerusalem Talmud Shabbat 14:4:12
To not invoke a charm:
That we have been prevented from making invocations over anything. And this matter is that a man say things, and say to people that those things [he said] benefit or damage anything. And about this is it stated (Deuteronomy 18:10-11), “There shall not be found in you, etc. And one who invokes charms.” And the language of Sifrei Devarim 172 [is] “It is one if he charms a snake or if he charms a scorpion” — meaning to say, that he says to them things, so that they will not bite him, according to his opinion. Sefer HaChinukh 512:1-2
Abaye said:
My
mother told me
that the remedy
for a day-old fever,
i.e., one contracted that day, is drinking
a jug [
kuza
] of water.
The remedy for a fever
two days old
is
bloodletting [
sikurei
].
The remedy for a fever
three days old
is eating
red meat
roasted
over coals and
drinking
diluted wine. For an old fever
that lasts for an extended period of time, the remedy is
to bring a black hen, tear it lengthwise and widthwise, shave the middle of
the sufferer’s
head, and place
the hen
upon it…
Gittin 67b:13
The Gemara inquires:
What are the symptoms of
tzafdina
? If
one places an item between
his
teeth, blood flows from the rows
of teeth.
From what does it
result? It results
from
the consumption of
very cold wheat
foods,
and from very hot barley
foods,
and from remains of fried fish [
kasa deharsena
].
With
what
remedy
did
the gentile matron
treat
Rabbi Yoḥanan?
Rabbi Aḥa, son of Rava, said:
It was
water
in which
leaven
was steeped,
olive oil, and salt…
Avodah Zarah 28a:8
Abaye says:
As a remedy for
one who is not an expert,
i.e., does not have strength,
in
the
way of the world,
i.e., in sexual intercourse,
let him bring three vessels [
kefizei
],
each containing three-quarters of a
log
of
safflower thorns. And let him grind them, and boil them in wine, and drink
the mixture.
Rabbi Yoḥanan says: These are
the remedies that
return me to my youth
with regard to sexual intercourse.
Gittin 70a:18
§ The Gemara lists a series of afflictions and their remedies.
Shmuel said: This gash
caused by a sword
is
considered
a danger
to one’s life,
and one may desecrate Shabbat for
its treatment. The Gemara asks:
What
is
the remedy
for this wound? To
stop the blood
flow one should consume
cress
soaked
in vinegar.
To cause flesh
to emerge
over the gash, one applies a salve made of
yavla
scrapings and thornbush scrapings, or
a salve made from
the worms of the trash.

Avodah Zarah 28a:13-28b:4
Rav Asi said: One may not speak over a cup of blessing
from the moment he takes it in his hand until he drinks it.
And Rav Asi said: One may not recite a blessing over a cup of punishment.
The Gemara clarifies:
What is a cup of punishment? Rav Naḥman bar Yitzḥak said: A second cup. That
opinion
was also taught
in a
baraita
:
One who drinks in pairs should not recite a blessing, because it is stated: “Prepare to meet your God, O Israel”
(Amos 4:12). One must be well-prepared in order to stand before his Creator…
Berakhot 51b:8
Having mentioned roasted grain, the Gemara tangentially relates that
Abaye said: Mother,
actually his foster mother,
told me: These roasted grains are good for the heart and drive away
worrisome
thoughts.
Eruvin 29b:12
GEMARA:
We learned in the mishna that young boys may go out on Shabbat with knots. The Gemara asks:
What are
these
knots? Adda Mari said
that
Rav Naḥman bar Barukh said
that
Rav Ashi bar Avin said
that
Rav Yehuda said: They are garlands of
the
madder
plant that are tied for their medicinal qualities.
Abaye said: Mother,
actually his foster mother,
said to me
about the healing properties of madder:
Three
garlands
maintain
the illness at its present state and prevent it from worsening…
Shabbat 66b:7-11
The Gemara asks:
What
was the medicine that
she prepared for him? Rav Aḥa, son of Rav Ami, said:
It was
water
in which
leaven
was steeped,
olive oil, and salt. Rav Yeimar said:
It was
leaven itself, olive oil, and salt. Rav Ashi said:
The remedy was
fat
from the bone marrow of
a goose’s wing. Abaye said: I made all of these
medicines
and was not cured
from this ailment,
until a certain Arab told me
the remedy for it:
Take olive seeds that are less than one-third
ripe,
and burn them in a fire on top of a new hoe…
Yoma 84a:6-9
The
tanna
recited the chapter of
the
Tosefta
discussing the actions of
the Amorites before Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Avin.
Rabbi Ḥiyya bar Avin
said to him: All those
enumerated there
contain
an element
of the
prohibition against following the
ways of the Amorite, except for these: One who has a bone in his throat brings
a bone
from the same species
as the bone that is stuck in his throat,
and places it on his skull, and says as follows: One by one descend and be swallowed, swallow and descend one by one…
Shabbat 67a:17
The Sages taught: A person should not drink water at night. And if he drank, his blood is upon his
own
head, due to the danger.
The Gemara asks:
What
is this
danger?
The Gemara answers:
The danger of
the
shavrirei
,
an evil spirit that rules over water.
And if he is thirsty, what is his remedy? If there is another
person
with him, he should wake him and say to him: I thirst for water,
and then he may drink.
And if
there is
no
other person with him…
Avodah Zarah 12b:5
For tertian fever,
which afflicts one every three days,
let one bring seven thorns from seven palm trees, and seven slivers from seven beams, and seven pegs from seven bridges, and seven
types of
ashes from seven ovens, and seven
types of
dust from seven door sockets,
the hole in which the hinge of the door revolves,
and seven
types of
tar from seven boats, and seven cumin seeds, and seven hairs from the beard of an old dog, and let him bind it to the opening of the neckline
of his garment
with a thread
made
of hair.
…
Shabbat 67a:1-4
The Gemara comments: This
was taught
in a
baraita
in accordance with
the opinion of
Shmuel: When one kills
a mad dog,
he should kill it only with a thrown object.
Furthermore,
one who is rubbed by a mad dog will become dangerously
ill, while
one bitten
by the dog
will die.
The Gemara asks:
What is the remedy
for
one who is rubbed by mad dog
and
becomes dangerously ill?
The Gemara answers:
Let him take off his clothing and run…
Yoma 84a:2
MISHNA:
One may not eat
eizoveyon
on Shabbat because healthy people do not eat it,
and therefore it is clear that anyone eating it is doing so for its medicinal value.
However, one may eat
a plant called
yo’ezer
and may drink
abuvro’e
.
Furthermore,
all
types of
food
that healthy people eat
may be eaten by a person
even
for medicinal
purposes.
And one may drink
all
drinks except for water from palm trees and a
kos ikarin
because they are
known as a remedy for
jaundice…
Shabbat 109b:4-110a:1
The Sages taught
in another
baraita
: If one
drinks in pairs his blood is upon his head,
i.e., he bears responsibility for his own demise.
Rav Yehuda said: When
is that the case?
When one did not
leave the house and
view the marketplace
between cups.
However, if he saw the marketplace
after the first cup,
he has permission
to drink another cup without concern. Likewise,
Rav Ashi said: I saw Rav Ḥananya bar Beivai
follow this policy:
Upon
drinking
each cup, he would leave
the house
and view the marketplace.
