Harvests

A
MISHNA:
If one takes a vow
until the harvest,
the vow remains in effect
until people begin to harvest.
This is referring to
the wheat harvest but not the barley harvest.
As for the exact date of this event,
all
is determined
according to the place
where he took
his vow. If he was on a mountain,
it is assumed that he referred to the time of the harvest on
the mountain, and if he was in a valley,
it is assumed that he meant the time of the harvest
in the valley.
Nedarim 62b:5
MISHNA:
The mishna continues the discussion of the
halakhot
of Passover eve, along with other local customs.
Six actions were performed by the
Jewish
residents of Jericho,
contrary to common practice. With regard
to three,
the Sages
reprimanded them, and
with regard
to three,
the Sages
did not reprimand them. And these are the ones
with regard to
which they did not reprimand them:
The residents of Jericho would
graft palm trees the entire day
on the fourteenth of Nisan…
Pesachim 55b:15
MISHNA:
Even before the
omer
offering is brought,
one may reap
a crop that grows in
an irrigated field in the valleys, but one may not arrange
the reaped stalks in
a pile. The residents of Jericho,
whose fields were categorized as irrigated fields in a valley,
reaped
the crops
with the approval of the Sages and arranged
the crops
in a pile without the approval of the Sages, but
the Sages
did not reprimand them. One may
reap crops in any field
for fodder
and
feed it to an animal…
Menachot 71a:7-11
HALAKHAH:
“The House of Hillel say, we heard only,” etc. The House of Shammai said to them: Is there not harvest the entire year? How is that? At the end of barley harvest starts wheat harvest. At the end of wheat harvest starts grape harvest. At the end of grape harvest starts olive harvest. That means, there is some harvest the year round. They accepted this argument. And why the grain harvest? Rebbi Mana said, because there accidents are frequent, for the sun only hits a person’s head at grain harvest time…
Jerusalem Talmud Yevamot 15:2:2
MISHNA:
If one takes a vow that something is forbidden to him
until the grain harvest,
or
until the grape harvest,
or
until the olive harvest, it is forbidden
to him
only until the arrival
of that season.
This is the principle:
With regard to
any
occasion
whose time is fixed, and one said: Until it arrives,
it is
forbidden
to him
until
the specified occasion
arrives.
If he
said: Until it will be,
it is
forbidden
to him
until
the specified occasion
ends…
Nedarim 61b:5
MISHNA:
Wheat, barley, spelt, oats, and rye; these are obligated in
the separation of
ḥalla
, and
each
one
of them
joins together with the others
to constitute the measure that obligates one to separate
ḥalla
.
And they are prohibited
due to the prohibition of partaking
of
the
new
crop
prior to the Passover
Festival,
and
likewise it is prohibited
to reap
them
prior to the
omer
offering…
Menachot 70a:16-70b:12
Since
before the
omer
you permitted one
to harvest the crop
only by picking
it by hand and not in the typical manner,
he will remember
the prohibition and refrain from eating it. With regard to searching for leaven, there is no reminder.
Menachot 68a:1
