MISHNA:
There are
halakhot
with regard to a defamer,
who falsely claims that his bride was not a virgin,
that are lenient and
others
that are stringent. How so? Both
one
who defamed
a young woman who is the most
prominent in the priesthood and
one who defamed a young woman who is the
lowliest among the Israelites gives
payment of
one hundred
sela
,
the fine stated in the Torah (Deuteronomy 22:19). Based on the relative scope of the fines, with the defamer paying twice the sum of the rapist and the seducer…
Arakhin 15a:5-6
Rabbi Yehoshua would say: The Evil Eye, the Evil Urge, and the hatred of others take a person out of the world.
The Evil Eye.
How so? This teaches that a person should regard his friend’s household just as he regards his own household. And just as a person does not want people to say disparaging things about his wife and children, so he should not want people to say disparaging things about his friend’s wife and children. Another interpretation:
The Evil Eye
. How so? A person should not look askance at his friend’s learning…
Avot DeRabbi Natan 16:1
MISHNA:
Just as
there is a prohibition against
exploitation [
ona’a
] in buying and selling, so is there
ona’a
in statements,
i.e., verbal mistreatment. The mishna proceeds to cite examples of verbal mistreatment.
One may not say to
a seller:
For how much
are you selling
this item, if he does not wish to purchase
it. He thereby upsets the seller when the deal fails to materialize. The mishna lists other examples:
If one is a penitent,
another
may not say to him: Remember your earlier deeds…
Bava Metzia 58b:6-8
Rabbi Shimon would say: There are three crowns: the crown of Torah, the crown of priesthood, the crown of kingship – and the crown of a good name is the greater than all of them.
How does the crown of priesthood work? Even if someone paid all the silver and gold in the world, we could not give him the crown of priesthood, as it says (Numbers 25:15), “It will be for him and his descendants after him an eternal covenant of priesthood.” For the crown of kingship as well; even if someone paid all silver and gold in the world, we could not give him the crown of kingship…
Avot DeRabbi Natan 41:1
The punishment for such an offence is indeed great. It is written: “Keep thy tongue from evil” (Ps. 31, 15). “From evil”: for slander and malicious speech cause disease to enter into the world.
Zohar, Mishpatim 20:512
