Frankincense
Sources
A
MISHNA:
There are
four types of meal offerings: Those
that require
both
oil and frankincense,
those that require
oil but not frankincense,
those that require
frankincense but not oil,
and those that require
neither frankincense nor oil.
The mishna elaborates:
And these
are the meal offerings that
require
both
oil and frankincense: The fine-flour meal offering,
as it is stated: “And he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon” (Leviticus 2:1)…
Menachot 59a:1-5
6) "pure frankincense": it should be clear. "and it shall be for the bread": It is indispensable to the bread. "and it shall be for the bread": We are hereby taught that (piggul thoughts [thoughts effecting rejection of the offering] in respect to) the frankincense — hold back, render piggul, and invalidate the bread. "and it shall be for the bread": It is not placed on top of the bread, but into the censers with bottoms, which are placed on the table so as not to crack the bread.
Sifra, Emor, Chapter 18 6
ונתת על המערכת AND THOU SHALT PUT UPON THE ROW — i. e. upon each of the two rows [PURE FRANKINCENSE]; there were two bowls for this frankincense, each filled with a handful of it. והיתה THAT IT — this frankincense — MAY BE ללחם לאזכרה ON THE BREAD FOR A MEMORIAL — because of the bread itself nothing was offered to the Lord, but the frankincense was burnt when the former was removed from the golden table every Sabbath. It (the frankincense) thus served as a memorial for the bread, because through it…
Rashi on Leviticus 24:7:1-3
“And incense.” It was stated, if it was a bundle it is permitted. How many are a bundle? “Rebbi Jehudah ben Bathyra said, there are no less than five kinds in a bundle of incense. If he was a pagan priest it is forbidden, a medical man is permitted, a trader is permitted. A suspect trader is forbidden.”
Jerusalem Talmud Avodah Zarah 1:5:3
ונתת על המערכת לבונה זכה, “You shall put on (each) stack frankincense, etc.” The twelve loaves of bread mentioned here and the frankincense were both mandatory so that the absence of either invalidated the whole procedure (compare Menachot 27). They related to each other just like the etrog and the lulav, or the blue wool thread and the white threads on the tzitzit. (according to an opinion expressed in Menachot 38 that when תכלת, the blue colour needed for that thread is available, a garment which has only white tzitiyot is not fit to be worn)…
Rabbeinu Bahya, Vayikra 24:7:1-2
The mishna states tangentially:
There are five
halakhot
pertaining to
handfuls. One who says:
It is incumbent
upon me
to bring an offering of
frankincense, may not
bring
less than a handful. One who pledges
to bring
a meal offering must bring with it a handful of frankincense. One who
intentionally
offers up a handful
of a meal offering
outside
the Temple courtyard is
liable
to receive excision from the World-to-Come [
