Divining
Sources
A
You shall not eat anything with its blood. You shall not practice divination or soothsaying.
Leviticus 19:26
Rebbi Ḥiyya stated: If a bone was stuck in his throat he puts of the same kind on top of his head and this is not of ways of the Emorite. Rebbi Eliezer ben Jacob stated:
you shall neither divine nor use incantations
. Even through there is no divining there are signs, but only after three portents; for example
when I came from Padan, Rachel died on me
; Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin
, etc
Jerusalem Talmud Shabbat 6:9:5
2) "Do not practice divination": in the manner of those who divine by weasels, birds, and stars. "Do not practice soothsaying": in the manner of those who "capture" the eyes (of others, causing them to believe that they are seeing wonders). R. Yishmael says: in the manner of one who passes seven kinds of semen (from different animals) over his eyes (and performs magic thereby). R. Akiva says: in the manner of those who prognosticate times on the basis of (such observations as) "The eves of seventh years are bound to be bountiful" (in the growth of grain)…
Sifra, Kedoshim, Chapter 6 2
The Gemara asks:
But doesn’t Rav say
that
any divination that is not like
the divination of
Eliezer, the servant of Abraham,
when he went to seek a bride for Isaac (see Genesis 24:14),
or like
the divination of
Jonathan, son of Saul,
who sought an omen as to whether he and his arms bearer would defeat the Philistines (see I Samuel 14:8–12),
is not divination?
Since Rav did not rely on the omen in his decision making, he did not violate the prohibition against divination, and there was no reason for him to penalize himself…
Chullin 95b:8-14
Rabbi
Yehuda HaNasi
said: Anyone who divines,
i.e., he guesses and looks for signs about the future,
the sign
will injure
him, as it is stated: “For there is to him [
lo
] divination with Jacob”
(Numbers 23:23). The Gemara asks:
But it is written
lo
with
the letters
lamed alef
,
meaning “no divination,” as opposed to with the letters
lamed vav
, meaning “there is to him divination.” The straightforward meaning of the verse is that there is no divination with regard to Jacob…
Nedarim 32a:12-13
None shall be found among you to make his sons or daughters pass through the fire, nor who enchant with enchantments, or inspect serpents, nor observe divinations and auguries,
