And Rav Ḥisda
also
said: One who is able to eat barley bread and
nevertheless
eats wheat
bread
violates the prohibition against
wanton
destruction.
One who wastes resources is comparable to one who destroys items of value.
And Rav Pappa said: One who is able to drink beer and
nevertheless
drinks wine violates the prohibition against
wanton
destruction.
The Gemara comments:
And this is not
a correct

as
the prohibition against destruction of one’s body takes precedence…
Shabbat 140b:9
It was stated: For what
reason did the Sages
prohibit the beer of gentiles? Rami bar Ḥama says
that
Rabbi Yitzḥak says:
It is
due to
the concern that Jews will befriend gentiles while drinking with them, which might lead to

our place and we did not have wine
for
havdala
.
We brought him beer and he did not recite
havdala
, and he passed the night fasting,
as it is prohibited to eat before
havdala
.
The next day we exerted ourselves and brought him wine, and he recited
havdala
and tasted some
food.
The next year he again happened
to come
to our place…
