Incidental to the above, the Gemara asks:
What is
the meaning and source of the word
“heaven” [
shamayim
]? Rabbi Yosei bar Ḥanina said:
It is an acronym,
shesham mayim
,
meaning: That water is there.
It was taught in a
baraita
:
Shamayim
means
esh umayim
,
fire and water, which
teaches that the Holy One, Blessed be He, brought them
both
and combined them together, and made
the
firmament from them.
Chagigah 12a:19
Eliezer, servant of Abraham, was an Elder and sat in yeshiva, as it is stated: “And Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his household, who ruled over all he had”
(Genesis 24:2).
Rabbi Elazar said:
The verse means that
he had mastery over the Torah of his master,
having gained proficiency in all of the Torah of Abraham. That is the meaning of the verse:
“He is Damascus [
Dammesek
] Eliezer”
(Genesis 15:2).

Yoma 28b:8

Midrash Tanchuma, Masei 2:1
“
Anqoqlot
and the grape skins.” Rebbi Zeïra and one of the rabbis in the name of Rav: Grapes which went bad before they were one-third ripe. Rebbi Yose ben Rebbi Abun said, even after they were one-third ripe. Rebbi Ḥiyya bar Ada said, it is a stenographic expression: “Grapes becoming bad at a third.”

Sotah 5a:20
§
Rabba bar bar Ḥana said
that
Rabbi Yoḥanan said: The drainpipes [
shittin

built into the altar and extending beneath it
were created from the six days of Creation, as it is stated: “The hidden of your thighs are like the links of a chain, the handiwork of a skilled workman”
(Song of Songs 7:2). The Gemara interprets the verse homiletically:
“The hidden of your thighs”; these are the drainpipes
that are concealed within the altar;
“are like the links of a chain [

]”; they are hollow [

] and descend to the depths…

Apropos the reward for honoring Shabbat, the Gemara cites statements about the reward for answering amen.
Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said
that
anyone who answers: Amen, may His great name be blessed,
wholeheartedly,
with all his might,
they
rip his sentence, as it is stated: “When punishments are annulled in Israel, when the people offer themselves, bless the Lord”
(Judges 5:2).
What is the reason for when punishments are annulled? Because
the Jewish people

The Sages taught
with regard to the verse:
“Before the hoary head you shall stand
and you shall revere the face of an elder, and you shall fear your God” (Leviticus 19:32): One
might
have thought that it is obligatory to stand
before a simple [

] elder.
Therefore,
the verse states: “elder,” and an “elder”
means
nothing other
than
a wise man, as it is stated: “Gather unto Me seventy men of the Elders of Israel,
whom you know to be the Elders of the people” (Numbers 11:16)…

of Pappunya said to Rav Mattana:
If one
found a nest on the head of a person, what is

halakha
with regard to the mitzva of sending away the mother? Is the nest considered to be on the ground, such that one is obligated in the mitzva? Rav Mattana

to them that one is obligated in the mitzva in such a case because the verse states:
“And earth upon his head”
(II Samuel 15:32), rather than: Dirt upon his head, indicating that one’s head is considered like the ground…
Chullin 139b:10-12
the tribe of Benjamin and descended into the sea first, as it is stated: “There is Benjamin, the youngest, ruling them [

Do not read
it as: “
Ruling them [

]”; rather,
read it as:

in the continuation of the verse:

Sotah 37a:1
As Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said: The Holy One, Blessed be He, gives a person an additional soul on Shabbat eve, and at the conclusion of Shabbat removes it from him, as it is stated: “He ceased from work and was refreshed [
vayinafash
]”
(Exodus 31:17). Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish expounds the verse as follows:
Since he ceased from work,
and now Shabbat has concluded and his additional soul is removed from him,
woe [
vai
]
for the additional
soul [
nefesh
]
that is
lost.
Beitzah 16a:12
Rav Aḥa, son of Rava, said to Rav Ashi: The Merciful One states: “Upon the doorposts,”
which indicates that a
mezuza
should be written on the doorposts themselves,

you say: Let us derive
a verbal analogy between
“writing”

“writing,”
