About This Text
Author: Eliezer Berkovits
Composed: Leeds, c.1939 – c.1943 CE
Towards Historic Judaism was written by Rabbi Dr. Eliezer Berkovits during the Holocaust, and was published in 1943. In it, the author argues that the central Jewish mission to establish a model righteous nation can only be achieved with Jewish sovereignty in Jewish land. Rabbi Dr. Berkovits discusses the role and challenges of exile in the historic development of the Jewish people, the challenges that a sovereign Jewish state would face, and suggestions for balancing secular nationalism with fealty to God and historic Judaism.
