About This Text

Author: Dov Baer ben Samuel
Composed:  c.1780 – c.1810 CE
A collection of legends about the Ba'al Shem Tov (also known by the acronym Besht), founder of Chasidut, written by Dov Baer ben Samuel, a son-in-law of the Besht's secretary. The book exists in two different versions: the Kopys edition (1815) and the Berditchev edition of the same year. The latter omits many legends that are found in the former, especially those that are of a particularly extraordinary nature. Later editions — of which there are more than ten — follow one or the other of these editions. Some are a combination of the two.
