Menot HaLevi is a commentary on the book of Esther, written by the kabbalist, Rabbi Shlomo HaLevi Alkabetz. He presented the work to his new father-in-law on Purim of 1529 in place of the traditional gifts (manot) given on the holiday. The author writes in his introduction that the plural word “manot” is justified in the title because the work contains two categories of interpretations: his own and those of predecessors. The second word in the title, HaLevi, refers to the author, a descendent of the tribe of Levi. Later versions include notes by his son, Rabbi Moshe.
