About This Text
Author: Menachem Meiri
Composed: Provence, 1270 – 1315 CE
Merir on Psalms is a commentary by Rabbi Menachem Meiri, a prominent scholar in Provence in the late 13th and early 14th centuries known for his expansive Talmud commentary. In this work, first published from manuscripts in the early 20th century, the author aims to interpret the biblical text according to its plain meaning (known as peshat in Hebrew), often rejecting traditional interpretations that he saw as overly interpretive or philosophical. In sections of Psalms that speak of tragedy and oppression, Meiri saw connections to persecution and atrocities happening in his own time.
