Mateh Ephraim (“The Staff of Ephraim”) is a 19th-century compendium of laws and customs of the period from the beginning of the month of Elul and through Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, and the festival of Sukkot, as well as the laws pertaining to the orphan's Kaddish. It is often printed together with the commentary of the author, Elef l’Mateh. Considered an essential legal text on the high holidays, it has been printed in dozens of editions and has inspired much commentary.
