About This Text

Composed: Rome, 1850 CE
Kerakh shel Romi (The City of Rome) is a collection of responsa to questions of Jewish law that arose while the author, Rabbi Yisrael Moshe Chazan, was serving as chief rabbi in Rome. Among other topics of note, the author famously permitted and even encouraged adopting inspirational melodies from Christian neighbors for use in Jewish prayer.
