משנה: הַפַּיִס הַשְּׁלִישִׁי חֲדָשִׁים לַקְּטוֹרֶת בּוֹאוּ וְהָפִיסוּ. רְבִיעִי חֲדָשִׁים עִם יְשָׁנִים מִי מַעֲלֶה אֵיבָרִים מִן הַכֶּבֶשׁ לַמִּזְבֵּחַ׃ MISHNAH: The third lottery, newcomers for incense come and participate in the lottery. The fourth, newcomers and old-timers, who brings the limbs from the ramp to the altar?
הלכה: אָמַר רִבִּי חֲנִינָה. מִיָּמָיו לֹא הֵפִיס אָדָם בִּקְטוֹרֶת וְשִׁנֶּה. אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵה. מַתְנִיתָה אָֽמְרָה כֵן. חֲדָשִׁים לַקְּטוֹרֶת בּוֹאוּ וְהָפִיסוּ. אָמַר רִבִּי חֲנִינָה. וְכֵן לְמַחְתָּה. אָמַר רִבִּי יוֹסֵה. מַתְנִיתָה אָֽמְרָה כֵן. מִי שֶׁזָּכָה בִקְטוֹרֶת אוֹמֵר לָזֶה שֶׁעַל יְמִינוֹ. אַף אַתְּ לְמַחְתָּה. נִמְצֵאתָה אוֹמֵר. שְׁנֵי כֹהֲנִים הָיוּ מִתְבָּֽרְכִין בְּכָל־פַּעַם. רַב אָמַר. בָּרֵ֤ךְ יְי חֵיל֔וֹ וּפוֹעַל יָדָי֖ו תִּרְצֶ֑ה. מַעֲשֶׂה בְאֶחָד שֶׁיָּֽבְשָׁה זְרוֹעוֹ וְלֹא הִנִּיחָהּ. לְקַייֵם מַה שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר בָּרֵ֤ךְ יְי חֵיל֔וֹ וּפוֹעַל יָדָ֖יו תִּרְצֶ֑ה. HALAKHAH: Rebbi Ḥanina said, nobody ever participated in the lottery and repeated133It means that nobody ever won in that lottery and repeated. Babli 26a, where R. Ḥanina says that bringing the incense makes people rich.. Rebbi Yose said, the Mishnah says so, “newcomers for incense come and participate in the lottery.” Rebbi Ḥanina said, the same is true for the pan69On all days other than the Day of Atonement, presenting the incense on the interior altar needed two Cohanim, one carrying the incense and the other carrying hot coals on a pan.. Rebbi Yose said, a baraita says so, “the one winning the incense says to the one on his right side, you are with me with the pan,” You have to say that two Cohanim are blessed every time134Since obviously the man standing next to the winner also never won before.. Rav said, May the Eternal bless his might and may You desire the action of his hands135Deut. 33:11, the blessing of Moses. The Babli interprets חַיִל as “riches”, whereas the Yerushalmi reads it as “physical power”.. It happened that a man whose arm atrophied136The arm could not really have atrophied since that would have disqualified the Cohen from serving; it must have been a case of weakness in the arm which was healed by his serving with the incense. but he did not refrain from it, to uphold what had been said, may the Eternal bless his might and may You desire the action of his hands.
