About This Text
Best known for his legal and ethical writings, Rabbi Israel Meir Kagan (better known by the title of his famous work, the Chafetz Chaim) also wrote a commentary on Sifra, a tannaitic midrash on Leviticus. His introduction emphasizes Torah study, especially of Leviticus, whose laws of sacrifices and ritual purity he sees as crucial but often neglected. The author describes finding a rare copy of the commentary of the Vilna Gaon on Sifra and realizing it was as inaccessible as others. He therefore wrote his own commentary, based on the work of predecessors but in brief, clear language and published it together with explanations of the Vilna Gaon’s commentary.
